If your looking to build a capable wheeler and keep it around for awhile then I'd go with the yota. Sounds like a project though. Just be carefull your not getting someone elses problem. Especialy if yours is turn key ready to go. I traded for a toyota a couple years ago and it took me several months to undo all the hack work that had been done on it. Still didn't regret it though as it turned out more capable than my other truck could have ever been.

that injected power is awesome when the knuckle rips off, or the steering box decides it doesnt like being mounted to sheetmetal, or the track bar rips off and it rolls, or the front ends rips off the body, or the fact that a winch bumper is stronger than the whole truck and can total it if used as a bumper, etc etc etc........... Gotta love them axle ujoint starps and yokes too or the dana 30 altogether, man what a garbage can cherocars are.:puke: That powerful injection works great when the gas tank is so easily pushed in and it damages the pump too. I could keep going.............:corn:

Get the toyota and keep your tires.

4 speed and a 20r that wont idle:puke: I guess when that tired motor pukes you can kick your feet through the rotted floorboard and flinstone your way home.:haha::haha: Not to mention that untrussed .120 wall frontend is probably bent so bad you could use it in horseshoes. Sounds like a headache, keep the running rig you have or wait for a better offer.:awesomework:

x2

I would just scout craigslist for a while and find a good running cheap toyota for about the same price.

X2 Hard to tell what kinda hack **** was done unless you go look at it. Its not hard to find one at a fair price that is a good start. If you do go with this keep your tires and same some money to fix the floors. The bed is an easy fix.................Flatbed:awesomework:

I think it would depend on what kinda wheeler you are,or maybe what kinda wheeler you aspire to be in the future.

If youre not into the narly stuff and dont want to get into doing some rockcrawlin.Id keep youre heep(assuming its a nice ride and dependable)

If youre looking into stepping up and hitting more difficult trails and maybe some rockcrawlin,Id go with the toy pu.Much better basic format to build off of.If the housing is bent not at the balls figure out where its bent and weld a truss on the the bottom of that side and the housing will pull its self more straite. Its amazing how easily you can move that housing around with a mig gun.

But I would really check out the toy close,so you dont end up with a basket case.Maybe take someone with ya that you respect and knows toys,to give it the look over.

If you plan on doing more than driving forrest service roads and having the rig more than about 2 years get the yota. That cherocar will start falling apart around you. Great engine and trans everything else is complete and utter garbage.

Yes the yota is underpowered. Yes the cab may have cancer but that is easy to fix. When you have a frame to build off of rather than laminated 18 gauge sheetmetal the sky is the limit. :D

Get the yota. even if it does turn out to be a project you can pick up another POS xj for $500 to thrash while you build the yota :awesomework:

im not into forrest service road. i ran the busy wild this summer in my cherokee. im starting to see why the uni body sucks. i ripped the stock cross member off and half my steerin box haha. its all fixed now but its still a hard decision for me.

79 20r 4spd??? I would sell the cherokee and buy a yota with whatever money you can come up with. This is assuming you can still get a decent amount $1500??? for the cherokee. I have no idea what they go for or if you have more to use. But I would fork out the money you would spend on the 79 yota to get it going on a yota that is already in decent running condition.
