Wyatt you skinned yours in AL correct ? How much $$ do you think you have in the sides ?

Im still up in the air on what material I wanna make them out of, Id like to keep cost down simply cause I suspect Ill trash them some what frequently. laughing

You remember that plastic I skinned my bedside with on the Kubota? I'd consider it over metal since it'd have to be way cheaper and colored.

How wide is the roll though ? At the doors it would have to be fairly wide, Id be into it cause like you said its cheap and durable...

Hmm black though, that **** would be rubbery in the sun wouldnt it ?? laughing

Tin place in Cordova will sale you the sheet matel before it is rolled into tin. Any color you want.
I think the name is Hickory Ridge Tin, the owner is David Sargent.

Yeah it's only 24" wide I bet. I can get their number if you want to call and ask. They might have wider rolls. It was cheap though. One roll was enough to do my bed twice easily.

Find the dirt track supply place over in your area. You can get a painted 5x10 sheet for around $100. Layed out right, you should be able to get 2 full sets of skins out of each sheet.

yup, that's what heath's aluminum skins are. when he bought his (late 05) from the roundy round shop here it was $80. I'm sure its at least where nolan says now. still cheap

Sheet what, al or steel ? I go into our local roundy round place fairly regularly but dont know if they do this. Ill ask.

You want me to look into some sort of plastic/composite that will take a smacking .....not too soft but also not brittle....nylon sheets maybe?

Mine is currently skinned in some heavy ass 1/8 thick aluminum. I will not, errrrr, should not be able to destroy them. 4x10 sheet of it was right at $200.

4x10 sheet of 1/8 Lexan is right at $100 here.

I also have some tin, seriously a roll of barn tin bought off the Amish Barn building family in the LP Michigan. $20.

Each has benefits and draw backs.

Barn tin, easy to cut, easy to attach, easy to destroy, not as easy to paint and look good. The pics of mine with the grey and red skins were this barn tin. Cheap and pretty nice.
I destroyed one skin though on the interstate. Wind hit it just right and peeled it like a banana then whipped it until it beat the piss out of its self. I still ran it two more wheeling trips. It had character.
Lexan, more expensive, you have to actually take your time cutting. You spray paint it from the backside and it looks good. Scratchs, and generally attracts dirt IMO (Static?). But what I really hate, once its all bolted on, anything and everything that hits it sounds like a snare drum. It rattles like a drum. I hate the noise!
Thin Aluminum or the 1/8" I've got on now. Costly but light for what it is, 1/8 hard to destroy, and has enough ass to it not to rattle or flex and sound like a soda can. Down side is cost and it wieghs more than barn tin or lexan or thinner aluiminum that would be easier to tear.

Hmmm Ill try to call and get some price quotes if I get a chance today.. I like already painted.. laughing

the stuff I am talking about is . 040 AL

It is the only way to go. I tried painted plastic and it is a little tougher than the AL, but it is ugly and looks cheap.

Look at skins as a disposable item. Make them simple as possible. I make my templates out of cardboard and lay them over the AL and cut it out with air nibbler shears.

I get into my skns every time I wheel big rocks. I usually take them off after each event and bang them flat with a rubber hammer.

One thing to do is get a nice set and put them on for inspection and then some beaters for the race and trail.

That is exactly what I'm going to be doing.

If you decide to go with aluminum or sheet metal I have a set of shears that go in a drill you can borrow to cut them out with. They make life alto easier on cutting lines. thumb.gif
