Is this just plain dumb??

Okay I have the shifter.. I recently decided that it really really sucks having to pull that little lever up all the time to shift , The only time I don't have to pool it when I shift is 1-3rd .. I'm sure y'all knew that.. So here's what I've done:. And I honestly don't think it's a bad idea, UNLESS , God for bid I got slammed in reverse.. And I know that's possible but I just don't see me doin it .. I still takes a lil effort to shift it because of the way it it moves in the holes on the shift rail, or whatever it's called.. Then I start thinking about if my hand was on it and hit a Big rock or something,,, has anyone ever done this or do I just need to put the son of a bitch back together? I really like not having to pull that damn lever. Here's a picture of the shifter I'm talking about..

The trans has detents built in.

On that style shifter I grind out the gates so that you can shift from RND21 without pulling the damn lever.

Then you ONLY use the lever for Park.
 
B&M Pro Stick with this modification. What I have in both the 38 Special and Solo Buggy.

The above is exactly what is in Solo Buggy. I recently further modified the above gate for the 38 Special by removing the lower track step between 1st and 2nd.

I WANT to be able to go from drive to reverse. Logic is if I got there in forward, and you can back out fast enough, you can many times save it from a roll over.
 
I had the same shifter kush, I ground down the gates and it worked a ton better, then I bought a winters and it's 100 times better in my opinion. :driving: I've never ran the B&M so no input there. :dunno:
 
I have run the Winters (Art Carr) shifter. It worked great, but I hated the gates. There are now multiple gates made to do what we do.
 
I found one of these still in box for a good Deal on CL.. Any opinions? I can read all day about shifters and still don't understand really, so many different ones, yet I have no idea the difference really. I hate my shifter, not to mention is old and abused. Would this be better for me? or not so much?

I think you'll still have to flip the lever before it'll go from neutral to reverse and then agin from reverse to park. Looked again. I know u will. It's in several of our drag cars at work.
 
Also I have another question. I have been wanting to run a reverse pattern for sometime now. And have been told different things.. Is this something that has to be done internally to the transmission for this to happen? Or is it all in the shifter set up,? I have seen shifters with different shift pattern selections.. I just can't figure out if it's just put the shifter on and it's a good or something has to change with the way the transmission is.. it's just hard for my dumbass to understand how the shift pattern could change without messing with the transmission. The B&M Z-Gate does not have a removable gate, so modifying would be a little harder other than removing the rod. It appears from this picture that you could take it apart and modify the gate and reassemble.

Read up on that first Billavista link I gave on how the gate functions. If you decide to modify it, a complete understanding is needed. Little tips left mean a lot, like going from first to drive with a detent. I have modified them with a drimel or die grinder, then cleaned the edges with a flat file.
