• Help Support Hardline Crawlers :

Kelly, Tow Rig Questions

So this clown that used to work for drove this Dodge 1500.
He drives like an idiot, doesn't understand that the pedals actually work when not pegged to the floor. On "Green" he'd get up as fast as he could, on "Red" slam on the brakes at the last minute. No one would ride with him because he's an idiot driver.
Well he just bitched and bitched and bitched about how much gas that Dodge guzzled, and how much it cost him, and he was going to get a small car.
Finally after months and months of him bitching he finally trades the truck for a VW GTI.
Exactly, the last thing this guy needs is a tiny sport scar to drive. Now he's not only got good throttle response, and better brakes, but now he's smaller and more maneuverable. So he turns the freeway into a slalom course.
So his insurance ends up bing more in the car, then he starts racking up tickets, then a schoolbus "runs" him off the road and he totals the little car.
Now he's well behind where he would have been had he just kept the damn truck.

Its hard to make the descision solely based on economics, those economics are like trying to pin the tail on a bucking donkey. If you could go out and hedge your fuel risk away for the next 8 years that would be something, too bad it hasn't happened yet. I'm surprised someone hasn't offered that service to the small consumer.

I'm not sure I can understand Nolen going to a 1/2ton gas truck. I like pulling something an not being at the upper bounds of my trucks capabilities when I do tow. The 1/2 tons Max trailer rating is 10.5, the 3/4ton (HD's) is 16.5. I could easily get by with a halfton gasser like Jimbro runs. My buggy and trailer weigh less than 5k. But with the 3/4ton diesel I cazn still run 80-85mph down the road and hardly know its there, and do not remotely take the MPG hit that I would with the lighter truck and gas motor. All about getting in the sweet spot and being overly capable.

Blah, blah, yada, yada, that was a diatribe, sorry fellas.

I'm guessing Nolen will be pulling less than 5k lbs too. You don't feel like a new half ton truck is more than enough for a load like that? I know the new Tundra would easily pull it all day long.

FWIW, when I look at the brakes, tie rod, motor, ring gear, etc. on the Tundra I see something more in the 3/4 ton class than the 1/2 ton class regardless of what toyota calls it.

I've got over a 1000 miles behind my wifes Tahoe with my buggy and trailer. It pulls it like no bodies business, but only gets 8mpg doing it.
A half ton is more than capable of such a light load, but I get 15mpg or so behind my diesel.

I was just searching autotrader for 2000-01 XJ's and they are damn cheap. The 4.0 is no great on mpg, but at 17-18mpg for 50 cents less a gallon sounds ok to me. They are so cheap to buy and they are good reliable rides. I may do that and keep my truck. That way I still have a nice rig to drive for work when needed but not everyday.

I use to drive a ZJ for a DD before I got my tow rig and it got 19-20 mpg (4.0) and was a comfortable daily driver that was dependable for me.

To tow once a month, it is silly to have a diesel truck.

My buddy is an accountant and just got a 3/4 ton gas Chevy. He ran the numbers with current prices it would take him 8 years to break even on a diesel purchase (new) over the gas truck he bought.

That is why I got a 2500 6.0.

Matt, dad just traded an 01 XJ. Very clean for $4,500. Wish I knew you were looking. I have an 07 Chevy 1/2 ton 4x4 Z85 (towing package ) with 4:10 gears. I was getting 7.3 to 7.5 to Tellico pulling the trailer. Last week, going to Gadsdan, the group set all rigs on cruise at 73. I got over 11. May have to alter driving style on the trips. I have never run on cruise contol, but I may start. I am in Atlanta now, came over on cruise at 75. Seams like more fuel in tank than the off the rev limiter I normally do.

Black sheep, that was a nice ramble earlier in the thread, good job and style. :flipoff1:

It's plain and simple testosterone boys! We went diesel for the first time back in 93'. We crunched all the numbers you guys have mentioned for weeks and it's plain and simple that for the average person or company with normal daily use, occasional towing, normal loads....a diesel is never the economical choice. When you factor in the higher purchase price new or used along with the 14 quart oil changes, high dollar filter, and of course in recent years the higher price of fuel etc.......You're waaaaaaaay better off buying a gas burner. Alot of people argue longevity of the diesel but we had been buying gas burners since 79' and never sold one with less than 250-300,000 miles on it AND most of you with the personalities I've seen are never going to keep a vehicle long enough to put that kind of mileage on it anyway. We went diesel simply because we liked them just like everybody else.

Now, back to the testosterone........all of you are obviously a little testosterone and adrenaline driven or you wouldn't be in this sport...you drive an earth conquering rig and you drive a badass truck but you think you'll buy something less to save .05 a gallon and a few mpg and you'll be happy? All that trading and buying would have bought a shitload of diesel fuel. If the extra cost of fuel bothers you then make one less stop at the 7-11 or beer store or fast food joint. If you like what you got just drive it in the ground and quit worrying about it! Wyatt is dead on target with the world market thing too. If you want to fight it vote for someone that will open up some drilling in our own country.

That has to be the most intelligent post I have ever seen you make. ;D

I 100% fit in that category. In no way do I NEED a diesel truck. I simply WANT one. I have wanted one since Ford came out with the new style in '99. And I have gone through 2 gas burners in that time. I look back and wish I had just gotten the F250 at that time. We all buy things that are not practical every day. Matt is having a new rig built, does he NEED it, hell no. His TJ is one of the cleanest most capable rigs around, but he simply WANTS something else. I nor anyone else is going to bash on him for that.

Ocassionally my old age comes out. I did have one typo....... .05 should have been .50 thumb.gif

I personally can't see MattO driving an XJ but he could always get a sticker for the back that says " I Used to Drive a CTD!" loller.gif

i have had 2 6.0s and starting on my third. have never been disappointed. my first one-01 HD with high output LQ4 and a few mods got 11 towing and 14 highway. that was 3 years ago. now you have companies like wiat4me that can burn your computer for much cheaper and get you better mileage. a diesel would be nice but IMO you would need to buy it new and be pulling a load at least 80% of the time and plan on driving it at least 300K. in the past, people would go diesel because of long term reliability, but now the gassers are more advanced. in the 70s you would be rebuilding every 70k, but now with EFI and much tighter bearing tolerances and technology, anyone whould get at least 300K out of a gasser if they maintain it. just my .02

Yeah guys I am still stumped on this one, thought about it a good bit today. Greg the sticker thing is funny it reminds me of a guy at work that drives an OLD S-10 with a sticker on it that says my other car is a Porsche. I thought that was funny, until I see a Boxster in the lot one day and find out he really does drive a Porsche!

Lots of 00-01 XJ's around for 4500-5000. They get about 17-21 mpg and liability insurance is about $300/year, so yes there is additional expense. Based on prices today it would save me $160 each month in fuel and if I went with a Honda or similar foreign car I would save even more. I am hoping the new drive to work will net me better mpg since it is all interstate. I would take a loss of 4-5k on selling my truck which is the only sticking point for me at this time. I think I will wait and see if my new drive to work will net me any better mpg.

Also nobody mentioned the other beneifts of 3/4 and 1 ton trucks and that is towing big loads (ie multiple rigs). A 3/4 can pull two large rigs on a 30ft trailer with ease. I would bet it could pull 3 sub 4k buggies with ease also. A 1 ton DRW can pull those loads all damn day. This means cheaper trips because you can two multiple rigs and split fuel. A lot of the time this is the only way going on long distance trips is feasible for most. Thanks for all the info and ideas, this is a good discussion. And Greg you are totally right, unless we use our rigs for hauling all the time or other work needs, we don't really NEED a diesel for pleasure, it just makes it more enjoyable.

When we load down my 34' gooseneck and haul it with my 07 Duramax, the mileage sucks balls. 7-10...10 if I baby it, 7 if I drive it normal (75 mph)

The new Tundra is a 3/4 ton truck that rides like a 1/2 ton. Add some airbags and I would not hesitate to load it with a 3/4 ton load.

I think that will be our next ride and just not worry about hauling 2 rigs as much as I do now. Yeah, I save on fuel whenwe ride-share, but the cut in mileage is a big factor there....

fixed it for ya :flipoff1:
