KILLING LP D60s HELP!!!

On orginal post you asked for tips and tricks yet you don't want to throw away any more money on the LP 60 front. Maybe time to pull it out and get more serious on the 14 bolt front. I'm sure you could sell you 60 for a considerable amount of money. That money would probably get you a great start on a new axle. If I remember correctly RCV will cure gears for $250.
I was originally looking setup tips or things of that sort. If cryo treating will help with deflection for $60, I would try that. But according to others nothing is gonna work.

A lp 60 will not live in a bouncer with more than 300ft lbs with anything over 4.56s ... PERIOD. Cryo will help, but Hi pinion or a bigger pinion gear all together is the only real answer (80,14b,rocks)

What if I pull 4 plug wires in the meantime? booyang

Where are you located at? And would you spend 250 on labor on getting it set up right?

Lots of preload is going to be more important than shrinking the backlash. But do that too.

When I had 5.86s I could break them on command. Since going to 4.56 I have not broken a set. I split a carrier in half and chewed the gears up but it was due to the carrier breaking. Have your carrier turned down so that it's true all the way around and have somebody that knows what they are doing set them up. I run stickies but don't have stupid power. I have a 14bolt sitting in the back yard but until I start going through more than one set a year I am not building it. I going on 3 years so far I haven't wanted to build the 14

Man I can't believe a LP 60 even last you one hill. No way any trick is gonna make it last any longer for you. I broke 6 before I swapped to a HP 60, hell I even broke the Jana76 kit and all I had was a stock 6.0 and 39s.

Ya that's what I figured. Guess I will just dump all the money in the 14 bolt. See you next race season. Lol

Did you ever have any issues with the HP60? Would you do it again or build a 14 instead?

My Jana 76 with load bolt and Spicer 5.13 gears has been holding up great for 2 1/2 years with 43 stickies. I would have swapped to a 14 bolt instead if it would have fit without major rework. If it starts giving problems I will probably do the high pinion Jana 76 due to the pinion offset of the 14 bolt.

I've been having this same issue with 5.38's and a 4cyl(ring gears only). Broke 4 in five rides and replaced another. They're set up deep and tight now. The guy that set this pair up is confident they'll wear out before they break, I hope he's right! I would have to re gear both axles to go to the Jana kit. I miss my hp 60.

I never had any more problems once I went to the HP60. A 14 wouldn't fit in my buggy so a HP 60 is only choice I had. If I was building a new buggy it would have a HP 10" GearWorks in it.

Jake Burkey runs a HP 60 and it takes a thrashing and seems to hold up well.

Also think how long Bobby's hp60 held up!

How tight are you installing the carrier? If proper pre-load is not there the housing will flex and spit a gear out everytime.

Tell me what your process is for installing the carrier please.

Have you checked the housing for cracks or being bent?

I set the gears up with mock up bearing (ground down middle so they slide on off easy) till I'm happy with the pattern and pinion depth, then install all the new bearing and races and put it all back together. I make sure I have good bearing preload but no special tools to ensure that. Also try to set the pinion a little closer to the ring gear than "specs" would suggest. I'm also no expert and don't claim to be, I could be doing is completely wrong. First time I have ever had this issue with killing gears though. But no I have not checked for bent or cracked housing.
