i am building a 78 cj 5 it has the stock model 20 and d30 axles in it... i wanna upgrade and go to a little wider i wanna be about 60" with a 410 gears.. i dont wanna cut axle and have them shave i was wondering if there is a upgrade that might bolt right in or with little mods as possible..i dont mind moving perch mounts and that just dont wanna get in over my head and aint got a ton of money..

Dana 44's outa the Scout II's might work

Maybe even the axles from an Early Bronco

Ford 8.8 outa the Rangers and Explorers, rear only.

Dana 44s from a Scout II work great. Also, Waggoneers came in two widths, the narrower of the two is almost identical in width to the Scout, and they also work great. Plus, the late model CJs (I know 1986s, but don't remember if 85s or 84s) were a wider track than the earlier CJs. Plus, some of the CJs were Dana 44s rears, instead of the AMC model 20.

do you really think a 8.8 is worth putting in...i know it is 59 1/4 inch or so and the axle shaft are a touch bigger than a 44 but how about the ring and pinion.. from what i have seen a waggoneer is hard to find that has not been raped of the axles already..and 86 was the year that some cj came with a 44 but i thought that they were only 55" and i would like to go a little wider than that ( i would be rwrong with that)... thanks for the input so far thouhgt

i have pretty healthy 302 in it with a t18 out of ford 3/4 and 20 t case... you think a 8.8 will hold up..i dont wheel super heavy footed but i like to play and show off!

i would like to go to those just dont wanna spend all the money having some one cut them for me and the cost of buying them.. od you know if ther is a rear 60 that is around 60 inches stock!

Anything will break, in the end most V-8 rigs end up with Dana 60's, they are more expensive, but cheaper in the long run, but if you are on a tight budget an 8.8 will be the best bang for the buck, complemented with a high pinion 44 for the front.

Also, you can always upgrade them to chromo's, but by that time you have about the same price as narrowing a set of 60's

but is a high pinion 44 going to cost almost the same as a 60? it is passager side drop still... i like that 8.8 i have heard a lot of guy trust it.. then alot of guy call it junk..whats the cost of having some one short a rear 60.. or front.. do you know any where i can have it done..

i wouldnt run an 8.8 if it was free.
they ARE junk. ive seen WAY too many fail...on DAILY DRIVERS.
and no, a HP 44, will probably be half the price of a 60....

what rig offers a high pinion 44 passager drop that is around 60 inches wide? or is ther one? is ther a rig out there i could get both front and rear 44 (around 60 inches wide) that i could use..just looking for something simple right now to get it out and going

Scout 2 or wagoneer as stated above. and with the scout you will keep the same bolt pattern as a bonus. and no on the HP. ford only and their drivers side drop.

any one know where i could find a set at a junk yard or in some one back yard!
