Has anyone had any first had testing of the Yukon Zip lockers? They are air operated like the ARB.

or the Auburn Gear ECTED locker? This one is electically operated.

There is always the ARB that I know works but I would just wondering if they are as good for less.

This is for a customers Jeep TJ that is 90% street driven, they want a selectable locker and thats it. They will be going in the dana 30 and dana 35.

I installed a couple Zip's when they first came out into one of our member's waggie D44-axle'd CJ---set up easily, and has endured lots of go-fast in the sand abuse as well as floggin' at Walker, and even a trip to MOAB thanks to a tbi 5.7L under the hood...:awesomework:

I say try them.. Its not your buck to experiment on.

Really, how can ANYTHING be less quality than a D30/35??????

Nothing dumber than someone spending $2000+ on ARBs for worthless axles.

I agree and thats why I was looking for a cheaper rout... Ill run it by the person and see what they say.

The person basicly told me that she wanted to build the axles... but she does not know that the 30/35 is a POS. I have some ideas for her like Rubicon axle swap but the 44 is just a 30 spline dana 30. Thought about building custom 44/60 3/4 ton running gear too.

Bounce any ideas that you have seen in a TJ that is a good medium duty axle setup.

Find a rear TJ D44 to build...
What size tire is in the plan??? and to what level is the wheelin' gonna be...

Go 60/14bolt?:D:stirpot:

A pair of D44's would be fine.

I ran a Ford 8.8 in the rear and a 44 up front with ARBS, never had any problems with them, running 36" Bias Iroks (which are 37" tall) the 30/35 won't last long with anything over a 35"

The dana 30 is actually A good axle for anything up to 35s, the shafts leave a little to be desired but overall a good axle. The 35, well I wouldn't trust it as far as I could throw it, and as heavy as they are I can't throw them far :-)

The dana 35 can be upgraded/built to handle 33s comfortably and 35s, maybe, If you are a careful driver, but for the cost of the needed upgrades you might as well built an 8.8 or dana 44. I know guy especially our four cylinder friends that run dana 35s for years, when built, but the cost is pretty bad. $400 for a truss, and c-clip eliminating shafts $650, disc brake conversion $550.

$1100 will build a pretty good ford 8.8! Just sayin'

All really good info guys, thanks a ton!

She is running 35" Goodyear MTRs that are new along with her wheels. 5x4.5 BP. Im not really sure there are any axles that have this BP so Im trying to weigh the cost of selling her brand new set of tires and wheels and having to turn around a buy new ones. Will it be worth it?

Her wheelin style is not hard core at all... its a pavment jeep 95% of the time. Im really torn on ideas only cause the owner has no clue what she wants and is leaving it up to me.

I just want to build her the right setup.

**** that. Explorer 8.8 has 5x4.5 BP, 31 spline axles, disk brakes if you get a 95-01 axle, and if she'll settle for it, most had a limited slip. If she wants to buy a locker, a Detroit or other full carrier locker will replace the factory carrier which is known as a weak point. An aussie will work in an open 8.8, and is half the price.

I ran a locked front with an L/S 8.8 for a while and it worked well off road, and had better street manners than a locker.

EDIT: pre coffee ramblings, excuse typos/grammar.

I agree on that 8.8 LS, I have installed a few on jeeps and if you stuff one more clutch in the case it is nearly as positive as a detroit. I bet that you could get that installed for less than $600 with gears.

Hmm... right on dude... I think this may be the rout I will take. Way cheaper and sounds like it will be better then a rubicon 44 out back. I think she will be ok with building the front and getting an 8.8 for the rear for now. I really doubt that she will ever "use" the jeep to its full potental but its not my job to tell a customer no. :D

Well and honestly the limited slip 8.8 does pretty well on the trail. I have a dana 44 in the rear with a detroit, and I put a LS 8.8 in a buddies jeep and, on the same tires, he has no problems keeping up with me. So I don't think that she will be dissapointed.

I have a ford 9 inch that is 4 on 4.5 five lug like the jeep. It has 5.13s and a spool.

On sale!

Im interested Brad, let me run it buy her... PM me how much you want for it and ill let her know... Im assuming she will jump on it.

Out of curiousity, does this TJ have a long or short arm kit?

Its a short arm, Pro Comp 4" lift if memory serves me. It also has a 2" body lift.
