I don't know anybody personally that out floor heat in their concrete oads either. I know of several slab houses around in town with no floor heat. I wouldn't mess with it either. If we lived up north, I might consider it then.

Honestly it doesn't get that cold for too long normally around here. Last year I would say is the worst I have seen it in several years. Had about 3 days of below freezing. I may regret it but I think I would rather have an overhang put over the garage doors on the side like Jduck was talking about.

It was below 0 for a while a couple of times this winter and below freezing a LOT. I'm doing a shop house on a basement and putting heat in the floor

My shome doesn't have floor heat and my bedroom, living room, and hallway are all bare concrete. Bathroom and kitchen are tile. I walk around barefoot year round and it's comfortable. But then I'm a pretty hot natured person.

Mine was bare (painted) concrete for 7 years, and outdoor carpet straight on concrete in the bedrooms.

I was thinking more so on how easy it would be to build a little wood or gas boiler to fire off in the afternoon on those cold nights and warm the slab up.

No dry air from a direct heating, and it would save a bunch on the electric bill.


Probably wouldn't even need a circulating pump, just put a check valve on one side of the boiler tank (and a higher pressure blow off valve/expansion tank on the tank)

I've never actually researched what is commercially available

I wont pretend I would be able to build all of that but I do understand what you mean by it. I was looking at the outside units that burn wood, heat the house, the tubes in the floor and your water for the house. Those units are $5k - $10k and you have to deal with the chopping wood and stuff. I just decided we are going to try the mini split units and see what happens.

Looks like our average temps are 10-15 degrees lower in the winter (which puts us below freezing at night from december thru feb). You should be fine.

I've been wanting to do one of these for years. Finally got some land and once I get that paid down some I'll start mine. Maybe two years out.
Messing with a 3D design app on the iPad. 60x100 with one big bedroom, big kitchen and bathroom.
