you live in a neighborhood, or in the sticks?
if you live in a neighborhood, I'd suggest a burglar alarm panel with a couple of loud outdoor sirens for starters. I have 2 120db outdoor sirens on mine. one on the back corner of the house and one under the eave of the garage. serious attention getters. plus they scare the **** out of ya when they go off.
cameras are also a good investment. not as expensive as you'd think, and you can get pretty good picture quality for your money.

I live in a neighborhood, some what hoody but not.. Im in 2 school zones and the PD is 4 mins away. Ive been in this 'hood for 7yrs bought my house 3yrs ago and never had a problem till now. Been thinking about an alarm system, but dont want a monitored system, just an auto-dialer style. Dont want monthly fees...
I feel this was an inside job cause nothing was bothered except the stuff above. Seems they knew exactly where to go. If i had visual confirmation of who comes and goes when im not here then....well i'll know :-X
The deer cams wouldnt work cause the dogs would set them off.. the Wi-Fi camera gives live feed and can record.
