i have an 86 cherokee with the 2.5, 4 banger in it
an the damb thing wont start after i jump start it???
i had the battery and alt checked, i made sure the cable's
were on the batt good and tight but once i jump start it and shut it off the fawking thing act's like it has a dead batt.
but if i jump start it and run it the light's don't dim and it stay's running????
im so lost on this one, im about to torch the fawking thing!
the only thing i can think of is it MIGHT be the starter.
any oppinion's???
thank's much justin

Does the positive battery cable go right to the starter on those or is there is a junction block?

there are to wire's on the + cable, one big that i think run's
down and then a little bit smaller one that go's to a little box on the fender along with a few other wire's.

today when i got the alt an the batt back in it i turned the key and the dash lights came on but once i went to start it the thing clicked and didn't start.
i tryed it again and there was absolutly nothing.
sorry about the spelling.

hey crash if you would give me your number and i will give you a call and explain it better over the phone?

Na-----Because if you think about it---if your giving extra voltage at the battery and it starts--its either a low voltage issue--or its your starter--and by that I have seen where they require a lil more amperage--and a single battery is just not enough to do the duty..

so i guess i will yank out the starter and have it checked in the morning. if it ain't that then im kinda sol.
anyhow thank's man.

Just be carefull when having it tested. One thing I see alot--guys will have them tested--and they test good on the machine. What happens is the test machine isn't able to simulate a good true load like what an engine gives...

So its possble it will give you a false ok.

If its still a problem drop me a pm

well there should be a solenoid in line...

the little wires that come off the main positive should go to a positive power block on the top of the pass. fender well. from there should be a wire to a solenoid in the fender well. on the other side of the solenoid is a little wire that goes to the solenoid on the starter.

then the big pos. cable should go to the starter as well. And the negative cable to a good ground.

Honestly it sounds like a dead battery. Being that it starts when it gets a jump and that it had power (lamp lights) then it didn't. Check the starter but then look back at the battery and throw a voltmeter at it.

You've got a voltage drop somewhere by the sounds of it...check/ clean ALL connections (positive and negative)

guy's i have checked them but i will check them again.
i know for a fact that the cable's are tight on the top side of
thing's.
anyhow thank you very much for the input.

i had a similar problem, it ended up being the solenoid on the firewall and right after that it happened, then it was the solenoid on the starter.

turn the key to run, then jump across the contacts on the solenoid at the firewall. doing this puts power to the starter, if it clicks and no start it is the starter solenoid.

if thats the case, try hittin the starter with the wood handle of a hammer
