New day, New issue

Okay, Wife has a 2005 Ford Taurus with about 79k on it. Drove it to Portland (Oregon) yesterday with no issue. Parked for about 7 hours and came out and the engine light was on. It has done this before, but went out after about 30 miles. First stop, I checked the gas cap, and it seemed just fine. Kept driving back and in Federal way, we stopped for gas. I decided to check the oil, and it was a little low, as in it was at the mark "ADD", so I went and also put a quart of oil in. Wife starts the car and the DTE reads 508 miles. This is odd being as it's usually, after a fill up, reads about 426 miles.

Yes, the engine light is still on, but the car seems to be running just fine.

Thoughts? Anyone have a computer reader to check this out that can use it so I know where to look for this problem?

Having known you for the better part of a year now, I can tell when you're playing with my mind. I do appreciate all the help you've done with my many rigs. And I know if I really need help, all I have to do is call. In fact, your's in the only phone number I have.

I kinda was thinking that the only place you would be able to run the scanner would be at your place of work. Which means I would have to come up on a Saturday that you're working. Yes, you may correct me if I'm wrong.

Technical Description

Evaporative Emission Control
System Leak Detected (no purge flow or large leak)
What does that mean?

This indicates a fuel vapor leak or lack of purge flow in the EVAP control system. It means a large leak has been detected. The (EVAP) emission control system prevents the escape of fuel vapors from a vehicle's fuel system. Fuel vapors are routed by hoses to a charcoal canister for storage. Later, when the engine is running a purge control valve opens allowing intake vacuum to siphon the fuel vapors into the engine.

Either gas cap is bad or has a bad seal. Or.. check under the car by the EVAP canister for a split hose. The EVAP canister will be back by the gas tank I dont remember what side but it'll be a black square box with a few hoses coming out of it. We have seen several with a split hose. Usually there is enough hose to cut off the split part and put it back on.

Look for this split hose, as JOOP mentioned.....Also, there have been issues with the canister vent solenoid leaking....hope this helps!!!

I will say that Eric shut down the code, which turned the light off. Debbie drove to work and it never came back on.

This evening's trip home may change all this.
