not sure if you've seen it but http://www.voltsxamps.com/ has some realy cool projects to get the most out of solar, wind, hydro etc
i saw the diy : Pump Water Without Using Electricity http://www.voltsxamps.com/?p=53#more-53 and thought it was kinda cool, sounds like it could realy help for a guy off the grid.

Ya but in WW we try and use gravity as much as possible But I have built those pumps before for fun.
