37" and 5.29s spool, longs call it a day.
option #1
buy a set of axles from ero
front and rear diff $1500.00
front new 5.29, new lockright, longfields, new bearings seals etc, sky highsteer arms, vented rotors ifs calipers, tg diff armor, clean and painted.
ifs rear 5.29, welded, new sky disc brake kit, tg diff armor clean and painted
option #2
Buy gears (260) and high steer (280) from odie, order a detroit for the rear (470 +S&H), leave the front open until I can afford an ARB, buy the 37's from ero (4 37 13.50maxxis creepy crawlers dot on 15X8 2in bs soft 8s 65-70% $650.00) and figure out a lift. most likely chevy 63's in rear and RUF.
If I go with option 1 I dont have much money for tires and lift but with option 2 I dont have the longfields or better brakes.
this is for a stock 85 that I'm wanting to have ready for a light duty snow run in early december.
Dont spend money for a locker in the rear unless its an arb or e-locker... Weld the rear, put an arb in the front, long's, buy those tires, 63's rear, and some lift for the front :awesomework:
Do you, jake, suddenly know everything there is to know about what to run, and not to run? Best bang for the buck is welding, but you can't turn back if you go something different...A spool allows just that, not to mention most of the investment in buying a spool can be recovered once $ allows for a selectable:awesomework: ....Most peeps can't give away a carrier once it's been welded, due to people's skepticism about the quality of the weld job...
thats exactly why I'm going with a spool. I want to be able to reuse the same gears out back when I do upgrade to a locker.
now my next question. Is a trail gear spool going to work ok or do I need to spend the extra 40 bucks and get one from marlin?
Did i ever state that i knew anything... no, it was just an idea and judging from your response of saying "Best bang for the buck is welding" i dont think it was that bad of an idea. He stated a budget, i gave him my 2 cents. Your correct a spool is a more versatile, safe, and cost effective decision in the end.
But since when do people think about the long term
are creepy crawlers any good in the NW? or should I just stick with iroks since they seem to do well around here.
Spools bend... If a open carrier is welded right it won't warp and it'll be stronger. I run 42's and 5.29's and i've had great luck with my junk not breaking....
dont waste yer money on the creepy crawlers, they suck in mud and snow, iroks or tsl's around here
I have never broke a spool in a toyota, although I have cracked stock carriers that were welded, I have also broke stock carriers break in half. I have never seen a spool bend.:redneck:
Search PB there are a handfull of yota spools that have bent. One of which was a buddies so yea, I have seen them bend. And that's great that you've damaged stock welded carriers. next time do it right and you won't have that issue.
