hey everyone ive got a 01 dodge dakota with the chrysler 9.25 (12 bolt) rear end. My rear end started making some noise a while back and just have been putting it off for a while.

when it first started it made kind of rubbing noise when turning and then it slowly turned into like a grinding/binding sound and has slowly gotten worse and worse.

If you watch the rear tires when the truck is turning slowly you can tell something inside is like binding cause the tire shakes.

Last night i pulled the diff cover off and was looking around a bit. I didnt jack up the truck so i didnt spin the tires yet to try to diagnose the noise or anything but from what i could see the spider gears & ring gear still looked good, no broken teeth.

At the bottom of the diff was one little tiny piece of metal and just a little bit of metal shavings but not really much at all. The truck has a 150K miles and has done some pretty good donuts/ smoke shows in the past lol. Anyone got any idea what might be causing this?

check the pin ,they sometimes go out slowly, and dont show a sign tell its to late

Would the wheel bearing cause it to make such an ungodly sound and make the wheel look as if something is binding inside?Thats what my dad was thinking was maybe wheel bearing
if it was bad enough yeh it could.
jack it up, and grab the tire top/bottom, and try to move it.

if it is only one side .it could be a wheel bearing..they usually hummmmm long before grind

its stock limited slip

you need to jack it up and shake it around and look for free play in a up and down motion and more then likely with it jacked up both tires off the ground you will be able to tell very easy. also try spining it in both park and in nutral...sorry i can't spell for ****...LOL

good luck!:awesomework:

I had a 2000 dakota that started making a "rubbing" noise. Took it to a shop and they said it was the limited slip. Changed the fluid, all better. Apperently there is supposed to be a special gear lube that Wal-Mart lube guys don't know about.

ok so i went out and was looking at it. behind the spider gears theres a hole that goes through the carrier, there was some sort of like half sleeve thing. It looks like this piece is loose and looks as if its rubbing against the bearing cup. anyone know the purpose of this piece? At first it looked liek it didnt belond there but after looking at some break downs of the rear end i guess its part of it.

the dish washer or what ever they are called between the spiders ,or are you talking the pinion .

they sit right behond the spider gears. it sits in a hole that goes through the carrier right behind the spider gears.

so i pulled out the carrier yesterday, it looks like the one of the thrust washers broke ( dont know how) and there is some sort of clip behind the spider gears which also broke too.

Not sure if it would be worth just replacing the damaged parts or buying a new locker setup.

sounds like you can just put a new clutch kit in it and it will be good as long as the case and spider gears arnt damaged

What all is included in a "clutch kit"?? honestly I don't have much experience with rear ends, its just money is tight right now and i need to try to fix it myself.

the case & spider gears arew still in good condition.
