I'm building a 9" rear for the sammy and a Dana 44 for the front. I am going to install a Detroit in the front and for the rear I cant decide, eather a spool or a Detroit. The vehicle is 95% trail and gets towed. What is best for all around tight trail?

if your in tight trails a spool might not be worth it in the rear. personally i would get a detroit, you'll still be able to turn fairly well with it in the rear.

Go with a full spool it is a lot lees $$ and it will be the same as a Detroit if you are on the gas the Detroit will only ratchet when you are not on the gas

spool it you wont be dissapointed.and it will save you about 250.00.

If your going with a spool you may as well just weld it... thats free and you end up with the same result.

I've got a spool coming for my DD + trail rig Samurai. I know I'll pay for it in rubber but to me the guaranteed traction is worth it. I'm doing ARB up front.

Well, it's not really a DD, but I don't trailer it to the trails.

I would never spool it. Tight turning radius is a good thing, and if you ever get the front wheel drive capability, you won't be able to benefit from cutting brakes or seperate rear line locks with a spool.

Welding it's cheap, so do it now and see how you like it. You can always yank it out and put a detroit in it later if you want or as $$ allows.

I honestly don't know if the spool kills my turning radius much compared to a detroit, since I have never run a detroit in the rear, but the front tires hitting the springs and killing my steering radius. When I spooled the race truck I don't think I noticed much difference.

It would be fun to find someone with a rear ARB and do a little testing, see how much a rear 'spool' really does effect turning in various terrain.

If I can drag a Scout through many of Reider's trails with a rear spool and not tag many trees, Crusty in his heep and you in your Sammy should have no issue :flipoff:

Detroit, the spool will kill your turning radius, BTDT.  Got Detroit now, unbelievably better and still have garenteed traction....:redneck:

With my stock junk I ran lock rights and liked the turning radius. Never had a spool and was thinking on a spool ,that was before I found my ring gear broken. Sounds like the Detroit would act like my lock right but a lot stronger.

You may be right, But I know from driving them they ratchet only when no power was to the rear while turning but if I was giving it power it felt the same as my spooled rear.

For NW wheelin you can't go wrong with either.

If you can afford the extra dollars get the detroit.

Cutting brakes, line locks and all the rest of that rock buggy comp **** on a trail rig is complete BS

No way dude, more levers and knobs is more fun :D

You wouldn't put front wheel drive in the same category? I dunno why you'd want to be able to do only mediocre front digs...
