tie rod?

You are correct that I have never ran such items. I base my views on how aluminum reacts to being worked. Ever pulled the interior out of an aluminum boat? It's scary the amount of cracks you'll find stem to stern from work hardening.. You can weld them all day long but they'll come back just because that's what aluminum does... :;

i'm wiht the crowd of not running them.

but i agree with this statment
and they grab instead of slide.

this is why i've shyed away from them.

Fully understood. But you may be suprised when you start seeing mass rigs running alum links and alum skinned boatside's and belly's.

ya, i've seen the alum belly's and boat sides.

still not sure about them

and if you've ever wheeled with me.. the tie rod needs to slide too..lol

Different grades of material, different tempers.

another good point is what do you want stronger, your steering link? or the rod on your steering cyliner? I'd hate to have a bent steering cyliner rod, and my $50 link is still fine. Work hardening an aluminum link over time may be better than replacing rams after a hard hit.:awesomework:

dang pook how do we always look at the same posts? and post at the same time? even on different boards? WIERD:D

4130 not 4340

Absolutely correct. But the fatiguing nature of aluminum is the same, if you harden it too the point of embrittlement it is useless, if it is anealed it is just as worthless so it's a fine line to find what will last the longest. Personally I just flat out trust my 4130 solid steering links from Bunk over anything else on the market.

I won't run a double ended cylinder. I've seen too many shafts bent, and heims pulled out with those silly little tie rods to ever run one. Most guys never think about the mounting enough to consider the ackerman angle either which is just as retarded. I'll stick with my single ended cylinder with 1/2 turn more to the left than the right and a solid tie rod thanks. :D

Bunk, what are using for your chromoly links? 4340? is heat treated?

Normalized 4130.

EDIT: Once machined they are heat treated to my (wuah ha ha ha) secret spec. Then the threads chased to remove scale.

Im more or less out of the link and steering game right now, Focusing my energy on my rig for koh. It will have a for sale sign on it and i will sell it next year so i can get machinery and officially start my business. Links and steering will be my main focus with a bunch of other idea's i have floating around.

So to summarize. Next year i will be a vendor on here, able to do steering and link work in a very speedy manner at a reasonable price.
