tow pig trans??

Would everyone still like the Allison if it operated in tow haul mode 100% of the time. That is how my 2000 series will operate after the swap into my old dually.

Yes.

I run mine in tow/haul most of the time anyway, because I like the way it shifts better (more like how I'd drive a manual) and it downshifts to help slow the truck down

Unloaded I don't like the driveability of tow haul. Shifts late, uses more fuel. I love the feel of it but around town just holds each gear too long and fuel mileage shows. Hey just my opinion

Same here, mine seems like it holds gear forever with the tow haul on. It would drive me crazy if I had to drive it like that everyday

What do y'all think about a 97 f250 crew cab 4wd diesel with 5speed? Any recommendations good, bad.

We ran F-550's with the 7.3 ZF6 combos at work. These truck weighed in at over 20K just bed, crane and tools. The only issues we ever had was the occasional clutch. I consider a clutch a wear item and can be abused by the driver. (company truck) That combo is very good.
Is the 97 you mention a true 5 speed or the 6 speed/granny low?

It's hard for me to argue the ford discussion. Trucks are like firearms. One guy feels like its the best thing ever designed and another would gladly set it on fire then pee on it the next day.

I have buds that have owned that combo and loved it. No complaints. I personally won't own a ford. ALMOST regardless of the year model, when it comes time work on it, I wanna kick the teeth out of the design team at ford because they make things so freakin difficult just to be different.

It's always something piddly where they tried to reinvent the F ing wheel instead of just being realistic.

Then again, some of the same can be said for Dodges TIPM design. As soon as they thought this would be a bad ace setup, poof all kinds of communication problems. I spose they could get a kick in mouth too. Haha

My 2 cents. Lol

Rock on, ford owners

I'm not positive but I think it is a true 5speed. Is this one that needs to tow in 4th or is high gear ok for 7-9k total trailer and load. I would hate to tear a transmission out on first time use.

What kind of fuel economy can I expect?

The 97 is gonna be a true 5 speed. You can also tow in any gear you would like with it. No limitations except what the truck is capable of. Good trucks. Hard to find that aren't loaded with miles but good trucks. You can do an inter cooler upgrade on it and gain quite a bit of power. Holler at matt on here. He can hook you up.

The Reason behind 3rd and not 4th on a Dodge is the way they are built. Any of the 4 speed 727 models such as 47re in the second gen Diesel's use a big spring to hold clutch pressure for the 4th gear. That set of clutches will slip with big towing loads in stock form. The rest of the clutch packs use fluid pressure. I swapped mine during a rebuild with a heavy duty spring. It has been awhile, but iir the replacement has a 800lb spring rate. I have built a few of them, in stock form I do not believe they are up to heavy towing behind a big motor.

'97 is a good year!! :dblthumb: There are a few upgrades that will gain more towing power with them, custom tuned chip, gauges and intercooler to name a few. The 5 speed trans is very capable of hauling whatever you want with a good clutch, you won't hurt it. I have set a lot of guys up at around the 400RWHP mark with these trucks are they are happy with the power and economy. thumb.gif A few things to look for if buying; Make sure it does not "huff" smoke out of the oil fill cap, if it does it might have a compression issue, some smoke is ok just don't want pressure. Also take a good look at the stock air box and make sure all the clips are there holding the lid down, they have a tendency of breaking and the owner ignoring it and the dust will take out the turbo wheel/rings. The stock downpipes in them sucks also so a good starting upgrade would be a 4" exhaust and a good intake.

Thanks for the info. I bought the truck barely running so going to take it to local diesel mechanic and let them get it purring. Didn't see any major leaks or hear any major problems. I think it's going to be a regulator or fuel pump but want to get it professionally onced over to make sure it's ready to go. Once it is able to be daily driven I plan to do a few upgrades.
