Just picked up an 81 long box. Totally stock and cancer free. Needs a little love but everything works and is there. The trans makes quite a bit of noise and I don't know how long it will last. Also the tcase rear output is pretty darn sloppy. Its not the u joint, its the output, maybe needs a new bearing? My question is about what is needed when swapping 5 speeds in these trucks as there are so many options. Don't need the strongest as it is just a stock driver. I saw a g52 with low miles here in the classifieds. How much work is involed in swapping? Drive lines, slave, crossmember, and any other misc?

As far as the cross member I know you can move it back. The front 2 holes will mount in the stock rear two holes then you need to add two new holes. I'm pretty sure the newer trans a 4" longer than your stock one so the d-lines would have to be changed to fit. I would look for a good trans to fit that year. Much easier.
