20 psi at idle? Just drive it, that's good for a 22r.

Now if its making clacking noises, your buddy might be right... timing chain can slap the cover if the guides are broken and hydraulic adjuster is not working properly, which makes a pretty good racket. Take the valve cover off and shine a flash light down inside the timing chain cover and have a look-see.

Or it could be a bad rod bearing or main bearing, in that case, see first paragraph, 2nd sentence.
Also, if the chain slaps the cover too much it can and will eventually wear through into the coolant jacket and leak coolant into the oil. That's a good way to destroy the bearings when all it needed was a $150 timing set.
