Toyota Welding steering arms

Ive done plenty of fifth studs holms. :D
And Bobbys is not cheap, its $50 for two small peices of angle iron and two nut/bolts.:eeek:

Yes i have seen guys running the high steer arms welded like that. No ours 5th studs are not just 2 angles it's a 3/8 plate bent it is not square, and yes they are $50.00. Time we ship them across country it cost 10 to 15.:eeek:

It looks quick but it still takes me a couple hours to make that stuff, your right time is money. Plus the hardware.:awesomework:

Bob offers a well priced option compared to a set of $600 sixpooters.

you know what fawk it run it I got duct tape and some big azz zipties

Your gonna need them after you weld and melt the highsteer shims(used for trunion preload) to the knuckle. How would anyone change the upper trunion, toy knuckles are not supposed to come off without the highsteer arm being removed. Don't get me wrong I love melting metal together with dual shield, I have welded steering arms back on a few occasions but what a mess. Trail fix only. When you come home grind, grind, grind. Using shims provided in any toy felt kit is highly recommended. My freind chose an air gun to tighten his high steer arms(no shims) and the knuckle split right down the middle but this was 8 years ago:redneck::redneck:

I have thought about doing this too. Make sure the shims are right and weld away.

I have done a few Dana 60s like this. They work great.

Do you mean like this???

You don't really gain anything by doing that to a 60. All you have to do is assemble it right in the first place then the weak point is the knuckle itself breaking in half.
The Toy stuff is so small it's going to be weak and break if you do anything short of replace the whole damn thing for something bigger.

spidertrax knuckles are about the coolest thing around.

the only aftermarket knuckle is the TG 6-shooter. I've long pondered why a new design has yet to be thrown out there. an entirely new setup that eliminates the bullshit studs and cone washers, and takes a bit of influence from spidertrax' 60 knuckles. we need something that can utilize the longfields' complete 40 degree capability. anyone wanna start a business?:D

i think you should just try to weld it. i mean... you could always grind it off, too. your trunion preload will be fk'd after that though.

Hey Chopslop, you might want to go defend yourself on Pirate, the natives are getting worked up. :stirpot:

Two steering arms. One top and one bottom tie them together.

Double shear is the only way to go with a toyota 8". My old toy is the only toy I have ever seen with double shear steering arms top and bottom.

I did exactly that about three years ago. I checked the steering stud torque once every year or so and they were always at 75 ft-lbs. It is not a maintenance problem, 40" tires and full hydro are alot more force than those little studs can take on a regular basis, period.

I'm not really sure what I have or haven't gained... I haven't even ran them yet...

I'm still working on mounting the ram for high/rear steer...

As long as him or anyone else has the fab skills to do it right, and is well prepared when they hit the trail with a group they know won't leave them, I say go for it...

.

There is more reinforcement on that set of knuckles then you can see in that pic, they won't break in half. :stirpot: The other set I did was on the Oldsmobile, and now they are on Caseys Jeep.

Screw that taiwanese crap setup, find a set of Marlins or have sky build another set of 6 stud arms and order or build this setup from 4x4labs. :D

Been thinkin about making two tabs that went down to the steering stop tabs. They would be longer than a fifth stud and have more holding leverage. Also an upside is the fact that I dint have to tear apart my whole forntend to install them.

I like this idea......give it a shot. :awesomework:

When owning a toy 8" you must be proud of how fast you can change a birf or diff.
