I decided to make my thread here so I could point out all the good and bad. I'm trying to stay purely positive in open forums because I want to do this event every year.

First I'll post up a few results from guys you might know:

BigWoody (aka Greg Stone): DNF'd. I think he hit a tree but I know the carnage was slight. He lost a bead and damaged the wheel but thinks he might be able to bang it back into place.
Travis: DNF'd. Hit a tree and sheared all the bolts on his ram mount. I'm pretty sure I saw it parked at the awards ceremony so it might be fixed already
Lou Levy: First place in the C class. Nice smooth run.
John Thomas: 5th place in the A class. A note about this, overall the weekend went pretty well but John got screwed. They were going to take the top 5 and have a runoff so he didn't go 100%. Midway through the day the changed the rules and said you get what you get. As the course dried out the times got faster and John was beat (John went first). He also entered in the B class but thought he would run the next day. The finished the B class ahead of schedule and he never got to run. He would have been a force in the B class too.
Me (aka Vanguard): 2nd place in the C class. I was pretty happy with my run. If I ran that course 10 times I think the time I posted would have been in the top 2. I did take some carnage. I was flying sideways through the air and my right rear hit a tree and bend my axle housing. It's going to need to be replaced.

Prizes: When he first set up the event he said he knew he might lose money but that the prizes were solid. Sometime in the last few weeks he said the prizes might go down if they don't get enough competitors. The actual prizes were worth between 1/4 and 1/2 of the promised prize money. For example, I was supposed to win $2,000 in cash in prizes but I think I can get $350 for the impact wrench and the check was $550. I'll be lucky if my prizes cover my damages.

Logistics: It was pretty well done for a first time race. Actually, it was pretty well done for nearly any race. I had faith that the times were accurate, that the course was safe and clear, etc. The music was good, the mud bogs were fun to watch, etc. They took a lot of heat as people predicted mass failure but it didn't happen. I was really impressed. They paid medics and cops to be on hand just but in both cases they had a slow weekend.

BTW, Nolan wrote on this forum that the reason people endo off of jumps is that they get off the gas too soon. That advice was really valuable. This course was 60% about who could handle the 2 1/2' jumps the best. There must have been 20 or 30 of them. Thanks for the tip.

This has been the best thread for pics so far.

Travis sheared/ broke the ram mount bolts. I heard the main guy was two hours late for a meeting that he scheduled. I think all first time events are rough around the edges. It takes alot of planning and help to make an event run super smooth. Wish I could of been there to race, but it wasn't in the cards. Maybe next year.
The prize money, I would have been pissed if I was expecting 2,000 in cash and prizes and I only got $900. I think I would have had to follow the dude home and see what else he could give me.

I'm glad this is a private forum.

It crossed my mind that I probably have a legal right to the $2,000. He changed the "contract" (his website) after I signed up to reflect that the prizes might go down if he doesn't get 40 people in each class. I don't know what his expenses were but it seemed like he took in a lot of money. Still, I hope to do this again next year and I don't want to sabotage his efforts so I will be a supporter of his publicly, even though at this point I'm a little jealous of guys like Travis that DNF'd but had $6 in repairs while I got 2nd and don't know how much this is going to cost me.

As for him being late to his own meeting, I didn't hear about that.

I think Adam Carter got 2nd place in the D class.

I have my pics now.

Got a little sideways off a jump and I hit the edge of my tire on a tree. Now my rear axle housing is bent.

It's straight up until the link mount but it bends out after that.

Now I have rear steer.

If anybody has an fj80 e-locker rear axle housing for sale let me know.

DAMN SON!!! The angle of your dangle is way off. :flipoff1: Thats impressive.

I dont think you can ever try to compare winnings to what you broke or can fix with winnings. They are just that....winnings. If we conpeted for the money, **** I have no idea. I know I'm not in it for the money, cause there aint much of it out there to be won. Especially when you look at what you can and will break.

As for the event coming in light in the purse. That **** happens. Its a catch 22. He had to throw out some numbers to get people to sign up, he needed it. But when he didn't get enough to sign up the purses he advertised didnt get covered. So be it. It HAPPENS a lot in many sports. Sometimes they keep the purse whole, sometimes they drop it.

Sorry, for the light purse, sorry for the damage, but congrats on the 2nd place. I know you had to have fun, and learned and experienced alot!

I had a blast, I really did. Somewhere out there is a video of the run I spotted on. I'll link it here when it gets online. We kind of whooped it up and acted silly right after we crossed the finish line. Between his race and my own I think "go fast" has ruined me. I'm not sure I can have a good time without some element of speed or a roaring engine again.

My motor is not special. It's a jeep 4.0 bored 50 over with a high compression head, a free flowing intake, and a free flowing exhaust. I might be a long way from the LSx guys but I'll tell you, the sound of it is my own personal mating call. I just love going fast.

I saw a pic of me online. The course was pretty muddy, you can hardly even tell what color my car is. I'm still looking for the video where I was the spotter. (Is it called spotter or co-driver in racing?)

diiiiiirty time! I think it co-driver if they actually ride with ya. But if they stay off course until you need help spotter works. I.E. single seaters have spotters. :dunno:

I was hoping you would post up a report.

I also hope no one gets too bent about the prize money. Most everyone in that group would have signed up for the event with just the promise of a trophy. When will these event guys learn not to throw a monetary figure out there?

Glad you did well. I am sure you know exactly what cost you the win, but don't play that back too many times because you just as easily could have had worse damage than the bent housing and DNFed. That housing is screwed, I bet you will be looking for an axle or some side-gears once you get that out of there.

How long (timewise) was your run?

It was a fun weekend. I can speculate all day about things I could have done different, but thats a waste of time now. I'll make some excuses first. I didn't realize I was only in 2wd until I came around a turn sideways and came to halt at the tree. I think that stressed the ram mount, maybe the bolts were slightly loose. The tires and wheels that I rented for the race had less backspacing making me around 3" wider, less room for error. I then caught another tree with the outer portion of the pass front tire, causing the ram to move in the mounts and shear the bolts holding one of the caps on. "Racer 320 out, off course, broken, dnf."

I'm confident that I would have had a clean, fast run had I been in 4wd from the start. Lesson learned. I drove it back to camp, and after about 30 minutes of repair, I'll be wheeling again this weekend.

The promoter was a joke. He was two hours late to his meeting friday morning with the head park officials, because he was up late drinking and partying with some of the racers. Unexcuseable for first time event of this size. If it wasn't for the volunteers, who did an excellent job despite minimum instruction, this event would have been a disaster. I have a feeling most of the volunteers will not volunteer next time.

As far as what cost me the win, I'm not sure. I had one backup on a ledge but I'm not sure that alone did the trick. I lost by 20 seconds and I had a pretty smooth run. I bet if I ran it 10 times that my real run would have been in the top 2. Also, I beat 3rd place by 1 second so I shouldn't complain. (Although he ran the day before when it was dry and I ran the morning after a night of rain.)

My time was 7 minutes and 55 seconds. While pre-running the times were all coming in just under 9 minutes. Personally I never had a usable prerun time. I would make a wrong turn because it was after dark or one time I stopped for 20 minutes to help a broken rig. The course was mostly fast with about 20-30 three foot jumps. The winners were guys that could drive fast and avoid the trees. Everybody expected Greg (Bigwoody) and Travis to do really well but the trees claimed them as victims. If I had their motors I might have crashed too, I don't know.

Compared the the Gray Rock footage I've seen this course was a lot easier, faster, and longer.

Yikes, that's the first time I heard about that. I got to know and like Sean a little bit and I hope the event happens next year. I agree that he was aided by a few really great volunteers. Dylan in particular seemed to have a gift for running the race. It would be really cool if he took over the concept.

Fastest run of the weekend was a stock class grand cherokee at 6:57!
I've been seeing that a lot. Some guys were saying the stock class went fast because their rigs were inexpensive and they had nothing to lose. They were great drivers and those times are amazing but it's important to note that they bypassed every obstacle. They didn't really do the same course faster than everybody else.
