What is the best "offshore" brand winch?

whatever you do don't buy the warn m8000. those things cant even pull out a tampon :haha:

the rugged ridge looks like a t-max knock off. a few of my friends bought them mostly for rear mount but havent put them to use yet.

The smitty winch seems like a good winch but I have heard about gearbox problems. in fact just this tuesday my buddies was making some funky noises and he's only used it a handfull of times in the year he's had it.

The prices for a new warn are ****ing retarded. If you can find a used one I would go that route because they can be rebuilt for cheap. if not buy one of the made in china jobbies and baby it as best you can :haha:

When you are out in the woods you need to be able to trust your life to your recovery gear, if you wheel you will get into a bad spot at some point. You will need to rely on what you have to get you out safely.

Dont skimp on a winch, save and buy a known good one. Otherwise you will be counting on an unknown to get you out.

I have an 8274 on the front of my 4runner. I picked it up for about 400 bucks ready to rock with a winch plate and decent cable. There are good deals out there.

Tested an approved thats how I rely on it .When u winch 12 times all day through the busy with a dead motor ,no over heating .Ive used the hell out of it and trust it .Never had to take one back except one time I cracked my seliniod box and took it back with no reciepts.can u do that at 4 wheelparts etc. I doubt it. Id trust my life with it thats what I roll always have .

A long time ago when HF first open they sold Ramseys so I purchased 6000lbs and after a hell of a lot of abuse the electric motor and brushes took a **** so Ramsey sent me one in the mail.seems like the Ramsey went out befor the Chicago did.It don't take me 3 yrs to build a rig usually a few weeks to a month. Thats the last piece of equiptment u need is the winch.$$$$$$ by then u end up broke.

Cant beat it for the price. Funny thing is iknow prob 5 people who have warns and they constantly have problems.

I asked the same question not to long ago and everyone said, "Buy a Warn" but no one ever came up with a good reason except that its a Warn. So buy the name is what i got out of it. I have met several huys who have either the Rugged Ridge or the Smitty winches and swear by them (not at them).

I was going to get a RR but was able to repair mine for cheap. Had trouble finding the parts i needed so i had to impravise and now it wrks great (so far).

If i do have to buy another winch it will be a RR or a Smitty. Warn are just to $$$$. Besides, one of them is als coming out with a 12000lb power house for like $500 :awesomework:

I have an 8274 sitting at my shop but its just too big for me to bring myself to mount on my truck. I am considering trading/selling it in trade for another warn.

Keep the 8274 and make it work, it's a great winch. Mine has never let me down.

I traded a working M8000 for it. I had to rewire it up with new solenoids (put them under the hood instead of out in the weather), fix a broken stud on one of the contacts on the motor. I also went ahead and tore the winch itself down and filled with new gear oil and resealed it. I wired up some in cab controls and did away with the cheezy remote plug by wiring up a 4-pin trailer plug setup instead. It works awesome. The only other thing I need to do now is rebuild the brake/clutch so it will free spool easier.

I have a Chicago as well. And it works well. Pulled Bill off the side of a hill. Spent all night doing it as well as Horus. Only people at Reiter with 100 feet of cable. I've had it for 2 years and have used it alot. Best 200$ I've spent

Most winches won't let you down until you are in a terrible spot, been there done that. I walked 12 miles out after being stranded in the snow, yes I was alone, but I won't get stranded again because of a winch, and yes I still go wheeling alone. :redneck:

I have 3 Warns currently. Had older models before upgraging. Then on the work rig is also a Warn. I have always trusted them and have not been let down. They are easy to maitain. Parts if ever needed are more or less local. Once needed the special mounting nuts for a 8274. No questions from customer service other than "What is your address". No charge!

I THINK 8274S ARE THE BEST WINCH HANDS DOWN. thier a little tall but i stuffed mine back in the grill on my 92 yota (same body style u got) and it looked great and worked great to. i took mine to warn it was made in 83 and they warentied a few parts, painted it re stickerd it and made it work like new for 200$ i upgradede the sylonoids n got the new controller, and threw on some synthtic rope. and couldnt be happier. i believe they are also the fastest winch avilible through warn. u would be a fool to trade it for a m8000

And how much actual load?

Some of the newer winches have line speeds that are a little bit faster then a stock 8274 but not by very much.

When im hanging on the edge of a cliff at rimrock im only gonna trust the 8274. Mines 30 years old and works great.

i have a 8274. I upgraded the seloinoids to the newer style and newr style remote(the older ones are no longer made) and the synthetic rope. Thats the only upgrade but the old chineese guy (super nice guy said he worked there for like 30 years or something) that works in the tech part at warn said that the 8274 and the 8274-50 have the fastest line speed. 73.4 feet per min. i dont really know what the diff is between the 8274 and the 8274-50

I put the big motor on my 8274 when I rebuilt it 2 years ago and it is way faster than stock now. The free speed is almost scary. You have to real careful when you are guiding the line in with no load.

Funny Shelby..Although I have used the **** outta that thing. It has pulled a lot of my friends and myself outta some pretty sticky situations. My only complaint is that it is slooooooooow...And by the way I paid $249.95 on Costco.com for it beotch:fawkdancesmiley::redneck: It's getting moved to the rear of the truck and a Brand new Warn will take it's place up front very soon:beer:

Yeah changing your front end out while slung up to a tree was awesome. Oh i have a smittybuilt and its drug my sh$t all over my garage.
