what kind if aluminum for a skid plate

Were you only using the UHMW for a skid plate and that's it? That stuff is made to go over the top of a skid plate not serve as a skid plate only.
 
Yeah cole thats how jimmy did it. I didnt know it was suppose to be over aluminum im pretty sure thats how he does all of them

I just priced a piece of 6061 1/2" aluminum 48x48. $700 seriously? Not going that route

That was at metal supermarket in Nashville. Sure there are cheaper places.

Why use aluminum and not steel? Weight savings only benefit?

Here are some weights I found through some steel supply websites and a company that sells uhmw dump truck liners

steel plate per square foot
1/4" 10.21
3/8" 15.32
1/2" 20.42

6061 aluminum per square foot
1/4" 3.53
1/2" 7.06

UHMW per square foot
1/4" 1.25
1/2" 2.50
have not found a weight for 3/4" yet

Weight is another reason to use a thick UHMW (1/2 or more) with a thin piece of 6061 behind it.
 
Check Loftis in Nashville, that's where most everyone in Nashville gets aluminum, and it's possible they might have a drop left over from another burn job.
