I was originally gonna run a TH350 behind my motor but found a helluva deal on an Atlas with 32 spline input. I know I can change the input pretty cheap but whats the deal on theTH400? I know there stouter than the 350 but do they suck up alot more power?? Also do they clear the driveshaft better than a TH350? Just wondering the pros and cons of each. Thanks

I like Th400s. One thing I like about the TH400 is it having 6 bolts to bolt the transfer case upto it instead of 4. I have seen several guys have problems with breakinga Th350 or losing ears on the trans ears on the Th350 with the 4 bolts and then having bad failures...Still can happen with the Th 400...I have a Th400 in my jeep, my jimmy smith buggy and 5 on the shelf!

Well the more I think about it Im gonna run the TH400. Im already set up for it tcase wise and it is stronger. I was mainly concerned with d-shaft clearance and power loss.

My driveshaft clears my TH400 just fine. On my Jimmy Smith buggy I use a two piece front driveshaft set-up that I made. On my Jeep I have a one piece with no problems.
Aren't you having Jimmy Smith build you a chassis or buggy? He should be able to address this for you if so.

You will not be unhappy with the 400. Lots of options for performance. Make sure you mount it correctly.

Yep thats the plan.....a plan that is moving way faster than I anticipated. Got the Atlas, 6.0L Chebby and one tons already. Prolly be after tax season before I contract Jimmy cause he works so damn fast. If I knew he was gonna be six months out I would throw my deposit down right now. When I talked to him he only had mockup for 350/350/205 so I might have to make a trip out there to haul the 6.0/tranny/Atlas and might as well take the tons out there too. If I do Im gonna look up some of you guys while Im in the area and get a ride in one of them bitches rollin Aetna style......then go back to Texas and ride along with a bunch of 400:1 low range ****ers :****:

I talked with him two weeks ago. He said he was booked through February.

Good choice! I love my TH400. I run a BBC and an atlas behind it and have had good luck with it.

TH400 for me as well. No problems in about 4 years. I have buddies running built TH350's with no problems as well.
I just hope my stock converter is ok to use when I find a 6.0L. :dunno:

10-4 sounds good. TH400 it is. Gotta do some research on how to bolt one up to my 07 6.0L.......or you guys could just tell me what I need if you feelin all warm an fuzzy about it.

heres some stuff i copied from a while back......

here are the facts about fitting an old style trans to the gen3 engines

1. the gm gen1,2 trans will bolt to the gen3 engines but you only use 5 bolts, the gen 3 engines do not use the middle bellhousing bolt on the pass side( no big deal )

2. you do not need a special flexplate, the curved 4.8,5.3,LS1- just need the t/c bolt holes ovaled out a bit and the 5.3 flex plates have a set of holes that match the small gm t/c bolt pattern perfect

- the 6.0 flat flex plate has the same t/c holes as the large gm pattern(th400 and most aftermarket th350 converters that have a dual t/c bolt pattern on them)

3. you need to use a crankshaft spacer when using a gen1,2 trans and converter there are 2 types:

- hughes gen3 crankshaft spacer part # hup-3795 $44 from summit/jegs, this spacer must be used with the curved 4.8,5.3,LS1 flexplates

- gm stock 6.0 crankshaft spacer 12563532 and longer bolts 12563533, this spacer can be used with either the flat or curved flexplate ( if using the curved style flexplate the flexplate goes on the crank first then the spacer goes on then the bolts, if using the flat 6.0 flexplate the spacer goes on the crankshaft first then the flexplate then the bolts)

there are a couple spacers available, theres one made by hughes, part #hup-3795 from jegs/summit. this spacer is only used with the curved style flexplate. there is also a GM spacer available, part #12563532 and bolts p#12563533. this spacer can be used with either flat or curved flexplates, if using the flat flexplate the spacer goes on the crank, then the flexplate, then the bolts. if using the curved flexplate, the flexplate goes on the crank, then the spacer, then the bolts.

Sweet. Im pretty sure mine is the flat one. Thanks for the info!

As far as mounting anything up.....Im pretty sure the Atlas adapter that is coming with my tcase has NO foot on it......should I use that or find one with a foot? I guess the only other thing to do would be to use the mount that goes on the back of the Atlas.

Okay will do. AFter looking at the Atlas adapter again it does have the foot on it. Is that all I need or do you guys recommend the mount for the rear of the Atlas also.....ive heard mixed feelings on them.
