I don't want this to turn into a manual vs. auto pissin match. I just would like to hear what your runnin along with some specs on the rest of you rig and it usage.

I currently have a 700r4 in my junk but I also have a rebuilt NV4500 in my garage I'm thinkin about swapping in for more power to the ground and reliability. No issues with the 700, but I can't help but think the 4500 will last longer? PLUS it will be funner on trails tougher or more challenging on rocks.

Please tell us;
Trans;
Engine;(for the sake of power to be able to lose through the auto)
Transfercase/splitters/ratios;
Trailer or drive on street; (DD's are another story)
Do you like/dislike your set up?
What would you change?

Mine:
Trans;700r4-auto
Engine;02 GM 4.3 V6
Transfercase/splitters/ratios;Stock Dana 300 2.62:1 LR
Trailer or drive on street; drive to local trails trailer to trails more than 100 miles away
Do you like/dislike your set up? great in the rocks
What would you change? Not sure thats why I started this thread

I have the stock toy 5 speed and the 4.7 gear swamp in the transfer casewith 5.29 gears front and rear and a twin stick. It works allright but I am getting ready to install the sm420 in my cruiser I just like sticks though.I think you have much more control but thats me.

I have a 700r4 in mine (well out right now for repairs:mad: ) but i really like it, when it's working, I am currently trying to figure out how i'm going to have my tranny guy fix it, i lost 2nd/4th gear and burnt up a belt and drum in it, he says that they aren't meant for wheeling and the stuff i do, but i have a hard time believing it when he builds them to be raced...:eeek: but apparently what killed mine (had it in for 5 years NO problems) and i think as a result of running it 1 1/2 qts low it started slipping, but he said there is a plastic valve that failed on it or was starting to, he says he replaces them with a metal one, because it really screws up the OD in them when they fail, and that's what cause the meltdown of the tranny, I will be sticking with my 700r4 cus i really like the low first gear, everyone says they have no hold back on hills, not if you have them built proper, the ground would be moving faster than my tires most of the time on steep sandy descents:awesomework: plus for traveling long distances it's nice to not have to worry about shifting if you're caught up in traffic, plus the tall 4th gear makes this thing idle at 60-70 mph:awesomework: other than a few quirks i have had with it, as far as adjusting the shifter, PITA. it has been a fairly strong reliable unit for me.

Oh, I have this in an '84 S-10 extra cab, with a 5.7L v8 cop car motor /700r4 / stock np207(soon to be np231) 36's and 4.56 gearing

nv4500 H/d
Atlas 3.8
hp44 ft, 9" rear
3 link ft, 4 link rear
39.5 Irok Radials
full bodied trail rig.
works great for what I want, a trail rig
the rig is more capable than I am, but I enjoy it.
Love the snow. Can lead most anywhere in the snow.

C5 with V8 C4 Servo, valve body, Stock replacement car converter.
Stage 2 B&M Shift kit.
Borg Warner 1350 2.48:1
3.73s in the diffs
34" LTBs.

Works well enough. I Have no complaints other than it would work lots better with lower gears in the diffs and a slightly looser converter so that there was some cushion between power application and tire spin.

It's pretty fun to drive with the V8 and shift kit though. :D

Trans; Dodge NV4500 w/chev input shaft

Engine; Chev V8 TPI, thinking of chaging to Cummins 6AT or 4BT

Transfercase/splitters/ratios; Atlas II 4.3 low

Trailer or drive on street; Both

Do you like/dislike your set up? Still in the works

What would you change? would like to upgrade the front D44 to a D60, but I need to finish it first.

will be running 37" Bias claws at first, since that what I have

My poor little squirrelbate 5sp does me just fine as long as the shift fork roll pins don't fall out!!!(fixed it w/ Miller 3yrs ago:awesomework: -no probs since(except broken clutch cable last yr @ Trail Jam!!):booo:

C6 auto, full manual vb with a neat convertor
95 5.0 stang motor
4.3 atlas
Trailer only
I will never have a manual shift wheeler ever again.
What i would change? I would reseal everything before i final installed it.

I use a Dodge NP435 behind a 1974 Chevy 350 w/TBI, I find it absolutely pointless to have a 5 or 6 speed transmission in an offroad, 20mph top speed, trail rig. I have used the POS SM465(who needs 3rd gear), and (who wants fluid running out the front of while wheeling)SM420.

TPI 327
TH350 with 700R4 planetary and some other mods I can remember.
D18 (2.4 something ratio. Stock whatever it is)
4.56's in the axles

The rig has been down for a couple years but the running gear always worked great for me. Hopefully it'll see some trails this year.

5.0 HO
Built C-6
Stock 300
6.17 @diffs
40" tires

Move back to a C-4,better D-line angles and less tranny drag.More motor.

SB 350 with TBI spliced on/T18 (6.32)/Dana20 w/Bronco gears fully twin sticked (2.46)/4.56 axles/36" tires.

It works, but at roughly 70:1, it could be a lot lower for the rocks. I think a 4:1 Dana300 would be much nicer. It's trailered as of a couple months ago, but was driven for about two years with this setup.

4.6stroker
AX-15
NP231
4.88's
36"

56:1 crawl ratio. Not too bad on the rocks, I would like to add a 231 crawl box or get a Stak,Atlas, or do a 4:1 kit. It all depends on how much money I save up. My problem is when I get some spare cash for the jeep I buy the little stiff first. it just burns a hole in pocket until I spend it. :redneck:

Th400, full manual valve body, all HD parts.
96 Vortec 350
4.3 Atlas 4:56 in diff with 39's
Trailer
The only change I will be making is my diff gearing
