what year diesels and motors were the best?

Same goes for a Chevy in my opinion. Haven't owned any Duramax trucks but I've driven Chevy 2500's as state vehicles for the last 9 years and they are junk...now I know ya'll will say they're state vehicles, but the majority of the interior components are the same as what you'd buy at the dealer. Rattles, shakes, plastic feeling, cheesy instrumentation, and worst of all...they're IFS basically gm cars with bigger tires and wheels. I remember looking at tie rod ends from a 2500 and realizing they're smaller than the same parts from a Tacoma...dumb.

I had a really clean '06 chevy 1/2 ton about 4 years ago and this is the exact reason I got rid of it. I personally want my truck to feel like a truck, not a big car. And, for a truck that had less than 40k on it, I couldn't stand all the interior noises. And every one I've ever been in has 1/2 the dash lights out. :****:

That's exactly what I was talking about...they're just not trucks anymore. Obviously the good ol days are long gone, but I remember when a truck was a truck and it had a dash pad, metal dash, metal doors with a padded arm rest, and a bench seat. Funny enough those memories are from a Chevy. Now they've gone off the deep end catering to the metro crowd of truck owners. Don't take that the wrong way...every truck we've mentioned can come with all the bells and whistles now...but only some of them don't sound like they actually came with bells and whistles.

I'm no diehard GM guy.. I just did a bunch of research before I bought my truck and read a lot of good rapport about the 3rd gen lbz Dmax trucks. I was willing to purchase a 5.9 6spd as well if I ran across a good deal. My truck's been in the shop zero times, my dash doesn't rattle but I do have 3 lights out behind buttons on my climate control system. I'll take my 3 dash lights out any day of the week over replacing head gaskets or automatic transmissions.

The Chevrolet work trucks are a completely different animal. I bought my '05 off of a dealer fleet lot. And drive it every day. 176,000 and still going strong. It has different door panels, no sound deadening in the body or floor, different seats, etc. Much less refined than the trucks for civilian use, and comparing the two is apples to oranges. And as far as the IFS goes, do you hear of anyone breaking tie rods or ball joints? The answer is a resounding "no". You hear much more about having to rebuild the Dodge front suspension every 60-80,000 miles. Tons of pipeline contractors use Chevrolets due to being more reliable under harsh conditions.

I have a 97 cclb 3500 srw 6.2 turbo chevy

It's not powerful , it's not nice but I've had it a long time and it's dependable, Last I checked it had 260,000 miles on it... Still the best riding vehicle I own

Jon Piper.
. How do you like the way that 6.2 sounds when it fires off on a cold morning? Them sum bitches sound like there coming apart!

You guy need to back up and read this whole thread again. Everybody's had great trucks! think back. Way back. I have seen many, many 88 and 89 7.3 I.D. Fords clock 400+K miles in construction trucks. With no problems. Your 12V started life as a simple 160 horse( no intercooler) great milage, last forever motor. Ever the 7.3 started life simple. All they needed was fuel and air, no electricity. Push them off, run. Than what? More, more, more! I used to haul pipe in a semi with a 238 Detroit (238 is the horse power) and gross 73000 lb. My new ford PICKUP has 400hp. As these engine has evolved to what we ask for, there is a price to pay. I think the market has progress pretty good considering how fast they have changed. I am disappointed on how long it ford to quit the 6.0 diesel and how long it took dodge to fix there sorry seats that wore out after only 50 k miles. But we can't complain about the engines because it what we wanted. Even with 400 factory hp, most of us make ours double that. Most of you guys are talking about truck engines not trucks. And most are talking about there main change years. I think if you take ten trucks, of any brand, and give them to ten people, half the people will love them and half the people will hate them. BTW, I have seen lots of ford and chevy 3/4 ton trucks with gas motors. How many 3/4 ton dodge trucks you see with gas motors? Maybe it is all about the cummins. I guess I just made some enemies.

It's hard to beat the cab room a Ford has compared to a Chevy and Dodge is not even in the ball park unless you get a mega cab or a new model. I think Bill wants the best bang for the Buck, with the exception of the 6.0 powerchoke there all decent engines. I like to be comfortable and my 99 7.3 had the best seati have ever sit in even better than my 08.

My 02 7.3 is about to tick over 300k on the original Auto Trans and injectors. Best Truck I have ever owned. Its been to California and back 3 times. thumb.gif

I wanted a new Dodge but but since I don't daily drive my truck, my next one will probably be a medium duty International with a DT466 and an Allison transmission or a Freightliner.

Perry, I've had three medium duty trucks and we still have two of them. If you don't get nearly new ones tou can't get any power. The dt466 is a forever motor but for it's size lacks power in older trucks and hardly anything you can do.in a 4700 medium you can get a dt570 (btw that's the cubic inch). My 2000 4700 only has 210 hp and 510 tq. My 3126 cat in our f750 is the same. For cat, you need the C 7 to get any power ant they are a newer truck but can go to 330 hp. They say you can get a 4700 international dt 444 ( which is a 7.3) and put a pick up wireing harness on it and get big power. Do NOT look at a dt 360 ( that is internationals 6.0 that was in fords). There is a dt 466 that is a high torque motor with 800+ lb. That will work if you can find a four door. Good luck.

Yeah we have a 2005 International box truck at work with the DT466 motor. It's currently getting some repair work done by a friend who's a diesel mechanic because the number 4 injector went out. It's been a good truck for the most part but it's always felt underpowered to me. So I was talking to my friend who's doing the repair work and he explained that these dt466 motors are really tuned down and that you can reflash the computers for more HP. I'm having him flash a slightly more powerful tune on the PCM.. like a 60 or 80hp increase from stock. If I remember correctly when I looked at the plate on the valve cover it stated our motor had 230hp and 480tq. And this new tune is an actual International tune, not some costume tune btw.

I had a 1991 binder service truck with a 466 with a 5+2 and had the factory engine with 2 hundred?? miles and who knows how much idle time it had 190hp and truck weighed 24k it was a dog on the hills but was very dependable. Started getting water in the oil and pulled it, put a 215 in it and I thought I had a pure hot rod no kidding it gained a solid gear on hills and no black smoke averaged 9-10 mpg still one of the fastest starting diesels I know of

Anyone else ? Towing rig down highway from Morris Mountain. Pretty good milage I would think. :dunno:

That's not even true. When the check engine light is on, the BCM adds 10mpg to the cluster....... :-p
