I have a 97 ZJ with the 318 V8 under the hood. About every two weeks, a half quart of oil "burns off" if you want to call it that.

The rig has about 160K on it, and runs just fine. No problems what so ever. I have checked it for leaks inside and out, upside down and right side up.

The only place that shows any signs of a possible leak, is right under the crankshaft pulley. But it isn't much at all. I cleaned it up at the beginning of summer, and there is a slight oily film on it now, nothing bad.

Any ideas?

Um well my trick question buzzer is going off :haha: but you answered your own question, it's "burning off"...

You getting any crusty build up on your plugs? I assume no liquid oil fouling...

I thought of that, but wouldn't the tailpipe emit blue smoke? It doesn't emit anything at all. Just normal exhaust stuff.

I would think if it were burning oil, it would spout black smoke or run like crap. No way it burns off a quart of oil a month and no noticeable symptoms.

It is but your not seeing it because its so very light it doesn't look like oil. I get to deal with sruff on a weekly basis...

karl it took a quart each 20 gallons before my old burban started to show blue smoke. its burning it, just too slow to notice it.

My wheelin' rig does and it goes through more than that. About a quart a run...

Have any of you guys tried that "Hyper Lube" stuff they sell at the auto parts store? Supposedly it help seal the engine back up so no more oil will leak into the cylinder. Also, claims are made that it lubricates better than oil, increased horsepower, blah, blah, blah. Just wondering if anyone has had any luck with the stuff or any of those other oil additives?...

There is no "mystical" fix in abottle...

The oil is being consumed by the motor.

remove the pcv valve and inspect for vacuum in the crankcase or remove the air intake, open the throttle blades all the way, shine a streamlight into the plenum and inspect for oil laying in the bottom. it is very common for the gasket on the lower plate to get sucked inwards on the plenum. jeep offers a kit to update the plenum (plate, gasket, and bolts).

I use that stuff to cut down the ticks and clicks as well as blowby in my Jeeps. J4000 has well over 200,000 miles on it (304) and the MJ is coming up on 250,000 (4.0L) I also run 15W40 Delo.

Our company trucks with the 5.9's will start drinking 3 quarts to a fill up when the pcv valves go bad.... oh yeah and no smoke. 68,000 miles on the trucks.

Naw... I assume the compression is still good and there is a small enough amount of oil being burned that it is not effecting the burn temp, so it's burning hot and completely. Between that and just not much oil, it's not at all surpising you can't see it, and I wouldn't expect much of anything on the plugs either, maybe just a little hard greyish buildup.

Yeah, I changed the plugs about a month ago. There was a grayish tint to them, but no real buildup. That's why I got scared, there are no real signs or symptoms of a poorly running engine. I can stand to have it burn up a little oil.

Previously I have only owned 4 banger motors in the long run, when they were losing oil, it was obvious. This V-8 stuff is all greek to me.

Owning a V-8 is just like owning two 4 bangers simultaneously :flipoff:

Yeah, but when a 4 banger is using a quart of oil a month, it tends to let you know. Much easier to figure out.

I used to have an old 2.5 XJ that spouted black smoke like a diesel.
