Why did kel leave?

He was an undercover agent for the FBI sent down here to infiltrate the Klu Klux Klan. But then he became friends with BugEJ and it compromised his mission so he had to go on the witness protection program.

He saw the two of you of together at the hpo ride. He was crying his eyes out about it to ed asking why, what did blacksheep have, that he didn't.
This was going down, while they were replacing the fuel pump on ed's buggy on up hill both ways. It was really sad, cause ed just kept saying pull harder kel.
