One of them is metric, and one is SAE, if I remember right. Always thought that was kind of goofy... but one bolts into the bellhousing and the other into the starter itself.

the one into the bellhousing was smaller then 3/8

The one that threads into the starter is 10mm and the one that goes into the bellhousing is 3/8. You can buy new brushes for the orignal starter at the dealer for about 40.00 and the starter will work like new, mostly only the brushes wear out on the org mitsu starters.
