So I tossed some new gears and new bearings into her and get it set up good.
Tore it down put a seal and set preload on pinion and it just didnt feel right. It felt OK but not great.
New **** should feel PERFECT, not OK or great.
So I tore it down and removed races and found damage to the housing that I did not catch the first time.
The race had been opening up under torque and then pinching/scraping the housing each time the cycle happened.
So the side of the of the race pocket is pretty fubared. It is bad enough to catch a fingernail on it pretty good.
Im thinking the damaged race pocket was letting the race not seat perfectly and I could feel it once I pulled some preload onto the gears during final setup.
Theres only so many ways to do it right, but I keep learning new ways that folks do it wrong.
