what is the BL at? is this a front or rear? HP or LP? see any street use?

Looks like the pinion is a little close but if BL is too tight along with that it can cause some funny gearmarks too. and than some sets of gears never get much or a "great" pattern. If this is a wheeler I say run it and you will most likely not have a problem but if this is the rear diff in your commuter car you may want to take a little more care on your pattern and if you cannot get a good pattern than get different gears till you get a good one unless it is a housing issue.

LP front, wont see any road use, just a wheeler...

now that was my thought to being to close...

before this pic i had .005 less shims in and the pattern seamed to be even higher up on the ring gear.. the BL is between .006-.010

i would rather not buy another gear set, i don't have that kind of cash burnin a hole in my pocket

maybe i will try one more time to get a better pattern,

thanks for the input:cool:

Mix a little gear oil with the marking compound and try it again. I always check in two places 180 degrees from each other. I have seen drag racers setup gears like that, they call it a "competition contact" this helps keep from chipping the heel of the tooth. I would run it in a trailered rig

Pinion's too deep.... I wouldn't run it...I know it can get frustrating setting gears---but in the end you'll be alot happier you got it right.:awesomework:

actually this is much easier setting up then a toyota because i haven't had to press off any bearings.. so far the backlash has been with in the limits, so it's as simple as tearing out the carrier and pinion. pounding out the race, reshimming then reinstall... :awesomework:

and resetting backlash...:; And you can go either way on the pinion depth shimming...They're all just about the same to me difficulty-wise, just some of 'em are fawkin heavy!!!:redneck:...Well, time to go set up a couple Zip Lockers, and gears on some Waggies...:awesomework:

haha guess you didn't read my last reply to threwouly:eeek::fawkdancesmiley:

but cha the hardest part is setting the carrier back into the housing with out squashing/pinching your fingers:D

I did read your reply thoroughly, just thought you were talkin bout reshimming the pinion depth only...:fawkdancesmiley: And yes, it fawkin' hurts!!!:haha:

Thats what a housing spreader is for :awesomework:

ya thats what hip was tellin me but what ev i have taken that bitch out atleast a half a dozen times now and all my fingers are intach and unscaved:redneck::haha:

hopefully i won't have to do it more then one or two times...

so with the pattern that i currently have what is wrong with it? do high on the teeth face to flank. to far to one side of the other heal to toe?

The pattern has a flat line on the bottom with a "wedge" shape pointing upward---That's the indication that it is too deep. Not all gears will get a perfect pattern, but I think you can play with this one a bit.

It's too close to the root, subtract pinion shims then set the BL to spec. also you are using way to much marking compound, mix it with a little gear oil paint the gears then install the axle shaft/shafts and have someone hold the axle shaft while you turn the pinion to give it some resistance, this will give you a more accurate pattern.

Have fun :haha:

the axle is torn apart so i will not be putting the shafts in it, but while a friend turns the pinion i put some resistance/preasure on the ring gear

haha ya i no to much compound reason being i wanted it to show up good in the photo. my camera takes shitty pics luckly hips takes much nicer ones:cool: i will give the gear oil a go tomorrow as well

as tomorrow i will be trying to get the fawkin king pins out:mad: what a pain. spent 40 bucks on a 7/8 3/4 drive hex head today:rolleyes:

in any case thanks for the response doods:cool:

check back tomorrow because i will be posting pics of tomorrows patterns as well:hi::beer:

Judging by the pics, I'd pull at least .005" out, maybe .010", and go from there...at least that way if it comes too far out, you know it's somewhere in between the setup in there now, and -.010"... Good Luck!!!:awesomework:
