evans creek issues

I recall a recent event at evans. It involved wheelers.

The person wheeling was in a scout and broke his leg.

The people who saved his ass were in HUGE NON JEEP rigs.

The FS even had the HUGE rigs winch several tow tigs out of the way for the helicopter to have room.

Good thing it was jeepers, not big wide rigs out in force at evans.

What you did was great, perhaps even heroic. And yes, your full-sized beast will always do good at Evans Creek. But that doesn't change the fact that the Dept of Agriculture has banned your ass for eternity. At least in the near future MORE of us will be able to use this resource. And since you have more rigs then most of us, I'm sure you'll be able to find something else to continue the good work.
 
Granted, I only run Evans a few times a years. But I have been going there for 20 years.

Ya know, one thing about jeepers is they come out in HUGE numbers on nice sunny days.

Maybe all you jeepers all go to evans on the same 2-4 sunny weekends and all you see is other jeepers in the sun.

The guys I see there are locals and tuesday wheelers.

Jeepers tend to run in packs too.

While a pack of 15 jeeps looks like a big number, 15 groups of three toyota guys still out number ya three to one.

Three toyotas arent as noticable as 15 jeeps.

Jeeps tend to be on CLUB RUNS in big numbers a couple times a year.

Think Im kidding, heres a "club run" on gravel roads in the snow.

Notice my toyota is a minority on the "road", but none of them jeepers would hit the TRAIL after door prizes at noon.

So yes I see lots of jeeps, just not in the woods on the trails.

For one, I aint no hero. I wasnt even there. If you were a rugular wheeler you would know who saved that guy.

The heros in the HUGE rigs wheel more than everyone on this board put together. If you are not familar with those guys, then you dont get in the woods as often as you think.




And yes I have tons of rigs. I will always be able to wheel evans. I have no plans to take the stomper to evans and it never been there. PS, the stomper is narrower than most one ton K5s. Its just not a trail beast.

like what sites? a jeeper forum? or a toyota forum?

This is a wheelers forum, there are wheelers from all walks of life here and on that poll.

The poll on WOW is from all kinds of wheelers too.

Unless the poll is from a jeeper website you are not gonna like it.

Any forum that is brand based is going to be biased toward their group/agenda.

How do you suggest we collect fair data?

I dont think ANY INTERNET POLL is valid.

Real users are at the trailhead, not the web. But dont tell the webwheelers that.

Yep, pretty similar results on WOW, PNW4WDA (although a little smaller there) and Jaydog found a few others.

Jaydog found them all, put all the numbers together from about 5 different NW sites and the number was between 80" and 81".
 
You're right, no single poll is valid. The only way you could get accurate numbers is trailhead surveys. A compilation of polls from various sites would be better but, even then, poll numbers wouldn't accurately reflect the actual users of the trails.

In my opinion, 80" is a bit on the narrow side, and around 85" should be the max width. But, what do I know, I wheel a damn'd Nissan.:redneck:

I'm finding WMS of Toyotas - listed below- to be narrower than what I expected.

In most cases these are narrower than the average TJ/YJ/XJ axle (which nets about 77" OS tire) but you've stated 84". Are the measurements shown below incorrect? IF the info below is correct, it seems that most Toy owners should should clear 80" easily.

Stock Toyota front axle measurements for comparison:
55.5" wide, 29" spring perch centers, '79-85 Toyota trucks and 4runners, SA Hubs
58.25" wide, 29" spring perch centers, '79-85 Toyota trucks and 4runners, IFS Hubs
63.5" wide, (set up for coil springs) 90-97 FJ80 and FZJ80 Landcruisers
'86-95 IFS front end is about 58.5" wide
'93-98 T100 IFS front end is about 65" wide

Toyota Rear Axle Widths:
55" wide, '79-85 4wd trucks/4runners - 6 Lug
58" wide, '86-95 4wd trucks/4runners - 6 Lug

Digger, I don't know who you are, so take this with a grain of salt, but it appears that you don't wheel much with people who have significantly modified their vehicles.

You're talking about stock Toyota axles which generally speaking are good to about 35" tires before they start busting apart. (yes I know people do and have run bigger but they have to do a lot to the axle to keep it working)

Similar polls to the width polls show tire sizes now are AVERAGING 35-36" and large tires are considered to be 40" and larger. Small tires are 33" and smaller.

I drive a 4Runner and I had my Dana 60s narrowed to 64.5" WMS to WMS front and rear. With my standard backspaced wheeles 3.75" and 39.5x13.50 tires, I measure 80-81" depending upon tire pressure. Jaydog's TJ with a Dana 44 up front and 8" in the rear, also measures 80-81" with his 36x12.5" IROKS.

It doesn't take much to hit 80" but you've got to forget about STOCK sizes unless you think STOCKish vehicles are all that we should allow on the trail systems.

58" wide, '86-95 4wd trucks/4runners - 6 Lug

This is the standard width most toyota's run. If they are running a SFA, they add 1.5" wheelspacers to each side. Then say 2.5" backspaced 10" wide wheels. That equals 73" wheel width alone. Many more have 2" or even 3" spacers so that they can get full turn, so it's easy to get to 80'+ width.

Hell, I'm on 33" tires, running a Waggy D44 and 3.75" backspaced wheels and I'm at 75" width aired up! And I could use a bit more width, as I rub spring when I turn.

There have been several polls...


Some have had more participation than others, but it is clear that outside of the PNW4WDA circle there are folks running wider rigs.
 
Chop Shop, The pictures you posted are of a POKER RUN so, yes there will be lots of jeeps! Sorry, but i am laughing....i remember seeing you there
 
Yeah, my stuff is modified. One Jeep is 78.5" and the other is 77.5" and both have got more modifications than most.
