Toy Story

Dont pack that knuckle FULL.

With Marlin seals and Bobs wipers, you wont want a knuckle full of goop.

JUst pack the bearings with your blue goop. The birfs like a MOLY grease.

Easiest way to pack,,,, trunions, by hand. The birfs, take a spring bushing that will press into the birf star and will fit a grease gun tip and pump it full.

If ya know someone with a broke inner axle shaft, you can take the broke stub end (or if its broke at the fat end cut off the other end about an inch long) and drill it and tap it for a zerk fitting. Then just press in the axle stub and grease the zerk till grease comes out all six ball grooves.

Done!

Hubs are NOT stainless, just normal steel. That rust wont clean up completely. Its from folks running those chrome hub ring/trim center caps.

Thanks dude!

What about the front springs? Anything to perk them up a bit? Seems a flat or neg spring is common on these trucks. i need to do spring bushings anyway so Ill have the springs off soon.

You can do pretty much anything you want to level the front. New springs, shackles, add a leaf, or make your own bastard spring pack etc.

Gonna try and work up a bastard spring pack. Im not really sure where to even start. Has anyone installed a single leaf from a rear pack into a front pack? Looking at the arch It seems like maybe a single leaf would help perk up the front pack good. Gonna try and hit up pick and pull before the end of this week and have a look see.

Got the truck all back together after going through the front axle, did all 4 brakes, all 5 shocks, a ton of little fix it things, got the dash all back together also. I still have a few little things to do but for the most part it is functional. I took the dog out for a shake down run around the hood and all was great. This little truck drives nice but the tranny is very unhappy. Growls loud in 1st-3rd but 4th is butter smooth and quiet. Dont know. Its getting a 5 speed soon!

I even did a little yard work with her.

I just cant leave **** alone, the goal was to build a winch bumper that I could remove and still install the stock bumper if I wish. The holes in red are in the same location as the factory bumper brackets welded to the frame cross piece. So all I did was cut those little brackets off and spent some time on the TM. So far no cutting and hacking has been done, I had to remove the center grill support and remove the 2 factory bumper brackets. I think it will work well.

**** ya:beer: Come up to walker saturday. I think money will be there in his sammy.:stirpot:

Ill be out of town this weekend over east. You and $ scare me with wheelin invites, Im thinking ill pass on anything but maybe a snow run or maybe just some exploring. I want to keep her straight-ish. Ask $ if he remembers our first night together in my buggy.

Man that truck looks awesome:cool: Please don't go beat it

Thank you, once again, its not a wheeler but it is also not a cream puff. It has some rust and dents but its one of the nicest unrestored ones I have seen so I intend to use it and keep it that way.

There's a new bridge. You won't be on your lid in the creek.:D
I'll let you know when we go snow wheelin. I also have a rig I don't want to beat up.

Ah good times!

Ya im iching to get in the woods for sure, just busy with hunting season right now. Let me know again for sure.

Hmm... so I had some issues yesterday while out driving the truck. Truck acted like it was running out of fuel with about 1/4 tank in it. This is the first tank I have run through the truck so I was kinda testing it anyway. It never died on me just chugged and sputtered under acceleration. Looking at the filter (new filter when I left the house) it was plugged up with rust (brown stuff). So finally limped to a gas station thinking that maybe my gauge was off and I really was out of gas, filled it back up and it only took on 8 gal.

So I plan on dropping the tank and at least cleaning it out for now and may do a replacement soon. Any info on cleaning these things? Also noticed its kinda hard to find a replacement tank for a 1981 truck.

Hey just for shits and giggles, when I had my '80 is acted up like this. What it ended up being was bad fuel line off the tank. The rubber had gone bad and collasped. Fought the thing for awhile before I figured it out. Try to check the flow off the hard line from the tank pick up and verify you have clear line. Nice truck,, think it should be the Mellow Yellow Ride.. haha I

Dang Por15 kit is almost as much as a new tank. :eeek: I may just inspect all the fuel lines, put some rocks in the tank and knock all the rust out and clean with apple cider vineger for now. Probably got some **** in there, when I got the truck gas cap was MIA.

Just get a tank out of a newer 2WD. The 2wd frame is the same rails as the older 4x frames. Common trick is to use a 3rd gen RE tank when doing an EFI swap. It needs to be a standard cab.

I also have some 1st gen tanks too.

But some pea gravel in there, shake it real good, empty and refill.
