4 truggy build

We also go the 3.8 Ford V6, W56 and dual transfer cases mounted/mocked into place (after some tunnel carnage..)

The motor is up and back from the stock 22re motor mounts. Motor mounts. Nice and simple.

Flat belly

Since, the body will be solid mounted, it sits lower onto the frame since I took out the rubber stock mounts. I will make up for this when I chop of the bottom of the stock rockers in the future. My cross member had to be modified since the mounts would be over 4" above the frame rails.

Sorry chim-

Plan is to use the center section and incorporate that into a skid plate. I ran out of daylight today, so that will have to wait until next time.

more pics- I can't wait to back half the frame and link it with 16" SAW's and JJ's from Trail-Gear.

We marked out a piece of sheet metal and my dad will put some horizontal beads in it at work as well as radius the outer edge.

last one for now.. I put the hood on to get a visual. I need to check out the intake on the 3.8 Ford Windstar to see if the intake is shorter than the Mustang 3.8. I want the hood line nice and low. The front will also be narrowed as much as possible. Going to be ordering some 1.5" .120 DOM soon.

hmmm... tube.....

The weekend started a little slow since I decided that my Front Range style crossmember really won't work with the flat belly and the body as low to the frame as it is. So I made a new one by transfer drilling a pattern onto 3/8" plate. Took some time, but it will work out a lot better.

This is the new lower section of the tranny/tcase crossmember of of 2x3 .188 wall tubing and 2" poly bushings from Ballistic Fabrication.

Still need to cut out my fish plate material and 3/8" brackets for the frame side.

Ruff Stuff Specialties DIY Beadlock kit. PBB price of $175 shipped. Can't beat that!

Finally, I decided to hang the doors back on the rig to make it feel like I was making some progress. I am trying to decide how much of the rockers I want to cut off. The green tape may be a little high, but you get the idea. Boat Sides anyone???
may07tjstruggy0052ia4.jpg

This side is a little more colorful (for now).... My original plan was to use 2x6" .120 wall rectangle tube and cut the rockers off right below the doors. The body is mounted lower than stock for a low profile look, low COG, etc. and I really like the idea of keeping things tucked up nice and high.

If I do end up cutting the rockers off up into the door area (right below the lower door hinges), I will most likely cut out the remainder of the stock floor (which I will probably do anyway) and cap the bottoms of the doors off. While this will probably be pretty cool if I can pull it off, it will definitely add more time to this build.... Decisions decisions..........

Last but not least, my 2.5 year old son helping dad out. He loves it and I can't wait to get him out on the trails with me.

im diggin this build up i was thinking of doing the same back as you with the back of a truck but still not sure if i wanna leave my runner open or not and just do a soft top for it in the back! nice to see another chopped up second gen runner though! ncie work keep it goin!

My 2.5 year old son was a big helper tonight. He was in charge of putting a washer on each bolt

Gotta train em' young!

Very impressed with the ruff stuff specialties $175 shipped deal.. I'll get the other three finished tomorrow

Finished up the crossmember this weekend (well 95% finished). 3/8" plates for the frame side brackets. I sleeved the cross member (2x3 3/16" wall) and used grade 8 1/2" bolts to attach it to the 3/8' thick center section. I did this so it is easier to remove when needed.

I plan to add some 3/4" thick keystock on to the center section to make it easier to attach the two pieces together as well as add some strength and insurance just in case....

Ruff Stuff Beadlocks finished and on the truck

I then started on the sliders since they will be the base for the cage work to come. Since I am going for a low COG and flat belly, I decided to not go the traditional route of mounting the sliders below the factory rockers and pinch seam. I cut the stock sheetmetal off right below the bottom lip of the door jam.

I bought 20' of 2x6" .120 wall rectangle tubing in hopes of using the sliders as built in air tanks as well.

I only was able to get one side tacked into place. It took a long time to cut through multiple layers of sheet metal and get it nice and level...

This picture shows the multiple layers inside the stock 4runner rocker panel. Need to stock up on more cut off wheels for the driver side.

Finally adding some of the $$ tube $$ I recently bought onto the truggy

View from the bottom. I still need to figure out frame tie-ins. Contemplating using plate to tie in between the inner edge of the slider and the bottom edge of the frame. Not sure yet...

I'm pretty happy with the way it turned out.

Last one. Not sure if the extra 3 or 4 inches gained was worth the extra work (and nasty grinding boogers) but I had a good time regardless....
