bad pinion bearing eating R&P?

That doesn't look like very good wear on the gears...and what the hell are sportsman gears...the cheapest thing TG could put in there?

ya, i'm gonna talk to them about those gears when i next call them. gonna be some good ones going in there soon, hopefully within a month.

anyway, here is what all is wrong.

not entirely sure what this mark is, perhaps karl can enlighten us.

Yeah. The one side (with the crack in the bearing cap) you can tell that someone had spun a bearing in there. It wasn't the setup that was in there as the current carrier bearing race looks fine.

But it's kinda gay that you would pay for quality stuff and get crap like that.

so what do you recommend for gears? i dont want the absolute cheapest, but i dont need the most expensive.

Taylor, I know you have already talked to them. But this is what TG advertised when I went to thier site.

Trail Gear said:
Assembled 3rd Members

All new parts, no used housings or internal parts. Ready to drop into axle. Third members feature top quality ring and pinion gears and lockers. V6 units feature larger OEM style V6 gear sets with longer pinion gear. Each unit is setup with solid pinion spacers for long gear life. Triple drilled flanges included covers common driveshaft patterns.

I'm gonna have to raise the bullshit flag there. You can see where there was a carrier bearing spun inside the cap, and on your bearing races, there is no indication of such wear.

I'd be calling those mofo's with a vengance.

Yeah, no kidding. Id be calling them about it too. If they're pawning off used parts as new, thats a no go in my book, especially for the price!

They're probably going to pull the "its been disassembled" card on you, but its still worth a shot to try and make them pay or repair.

The wear on those gears looks like ****, IMO. That on top of the bad pinion bearing and the obviously used carrier, which was bad in the first place... I'd be calling them and raising hell.

Throw in a 50 dollar 4.10 third to get you on the road for now and then fight them to get either a NEW rebuilt third with quality gears or your money back.

that mark is called a gaul. its caused by a spinning bearing. what actually happens is a fiber of metal gets caught between two moving surfaces and the metal fiber rolls into a ball removing more metal as it rolls also increasing in size. like making a snowman. as you roll the big ball across the snow it picks up the snow it just rolled across. when it happens on metal in close tolerances it destroys things fast.

Nice to meet you dain bramage:awesomework:

alright, i will get out of here in a few minutes. i look forward to driving my tank thru seattle. :awesomework:

ok, HUGE thanks to karl and jonathon for helping me get this **** done. you guys rock, i will buy you a round at the GTG.

anyone know what this is? the third i got didnt have the plug in it. i assume its some kind of sensor hole, but i dont know. i am going to try and tap it out tomorrow and re-use it, unless someone has one laying around they could part with. if i cant get it out in one piece, how else can i seal it up?
