Chevy Buggy Motors

I need to find out how much my all alum 5.3 wieghs. The compare to the 529 caddy thats sitting int he shop. That thing is light considering.

I picked up my motor/ecm/harness for 350 bux on ebay. I see them at the same yard for the same price every once in a while. I will check on it. I did have to buy a starter and alternator, and an intake since the yard had fawked up the one on it...got it for 50 bux.... I already had the pump. I picked up a stock LS6 cam/springs for 150. they can be found cheap...

Screw those beat down no harness/accesoriy having turds. CALL these guys, they get motors direct from trucks that GM can't leagaly sell. They normaly have some alot cheaper than what's on ebay.

Some of their stuff has less than 100 miles, you can even buy a whole vette drivetrain, and d-max's.

I have the 5.3 in my Stock Mod rig. I bought the engine complete with everything but the AC compressor from a 2002 Yukon with 60,000 miles for $900.00. It had the drive by wire TB so I just swapped it with a 6.0 TB and hooked the cable to the stock TJ pedal. I told Jim at Jims Performace what my plan was prior to sending him the harness and computer so he could customize to my build which included JBA headers with 2.5" dual exhaust and Flowmaster mufflers. He also took out the Flexfuel and auto tranny stuff since I'm running a 700R4 with reverse manual valve body. Jim estimates this setup at around 330hp on premium gas. This thing literally blows the Dodge 5.2 away that's in my trail rig TJ. Granted the Stock Mod rig is lighter (approx. 3500lbs) and on 35" Krawlers compared to well over 4,000lbs and 39.5" Iroks. Since building this thing I have twisted the splines on both front and rear driveshafts, broke 2 outer stub shafts on the front 44 and twisted the splines on the rear alloy 44 shafts. It now has Solid HP 35 spline 60s front and rear. This is by far the easiest engine install I've done and it plenty of power and torque for competition.

^^^^The 5.3's from frontwheel drive cars use a 60 degree bellhousing, you'd have to use a 700r, 904, etc.

a couple months ago, my supplier had a aluminum 5.3 out of a 07 impala SS with 2700 miles complete with harness/brain/accesories for $2750. those motors ran a y pipe that swings over the belhousing and the exhaust manifolds followed them too. would be perfect for a buggy

Keith told me today that he got a 5.3 for 1k for Carter last week. He said he can probably lay hands on one for me also. Jim, you have any sources for a 5.3 up there? If so I could wait to closer to time and not have to transport it up to you.

Dont forget about the LS2. Aluminum 6.0 out of late 04' + GTO's, vette's, Trail Blazer SS' and Silverado SS'. In the process for putting one in my car...I actually have a LS1 blcok, crank, for sale :fish:

I'll make a call for you and price one of each...the last quote on a 5.3 I got was $500 no accesories/harness or computer. If you have the time all that stuff can be found cheap. the last LS1 I bought was $900 with no extras, but that was rare, cheap and I would've bought it anyway for a spare.

Thanks Greg, I would rather just go complete and save the hassle. TC makes a high clearance oil pan for them that Jim says I should go with.

Made a diffrent post but will add it hear too.

aluminum block is 104

cast iron is 215

It is funny how much some people spend to lose that much weight in the axles but won't spend it to loose it up higher where it would be better to loose it. Say what you want but I don't want my skid plate mounted to any part of the drive train. I have broke so many transmission for this that it isn't even funny because the skid plate actually broke them. I know they are mounted to the front of the engine but there has to be another place to mount it to.

Matt, FYI, found an 11K mile 5.3 out of an '05 rollover still complete. I pull everything I want, meaning EVERYHTING and then some **** you don't need, just in case. $1200. Or a 40K 04 with for $950.

Adam, what are you talking about with the skid plate and drivetrain mounts?

Twisted Customs does this. The front of the full belly skid is mounted to the block.

I don't like it, but they seem to get away with it fine. That said, they don't do many SE style wheelies and come down on them that I have seen.

That was one of the reasons I went with the cast block over the AL block (the others being oiling and cost)
