Dad's stang...

So I completely disassembled the trans. I "kinda" found what I was expecting but it was not the root cause of the noise.

I did find a bearing issue in the counter shaft with the counter shaft pin and some of the needle bearings. The side plates(brass) also had allot of metal imbeded in them.

The counter gear must be allot harder material than the pin because there was not a single amount of galling to the bearing surface and you could still see the shiny hone marks from manufacturing.

Here is where the noise was coming from. The first gear was clunking away.

The gear that first rides against on the counter shaft only had a couple small nicks on it but no bad galling of teeth missing. First was either just simply broke or something having to do with being too soft. I don't know.

Set aside till we can figure out what to do.

My other task was to see if I could get the fuel sending unit out.

It is a little rusty around the lock collar for the unit.

Again I am draining the tank, lol. I am very happy its there..

And it actually came out very easy and the tank and lock collar actually are in great shape. There are also no big chunks floating in the tank.

Oooooo...shiny parts with pieces missing...:booo:
On the other side of it, could this be the time for a transplant?:stirpot:

Great job Mike! When can I drop mine off? hahaha

Do you need 3 speed parts? I've still got lots of parts from my '66 3 speed.

reallllly.. Whatcha got John? I can source a seal/bearing kit but the first gear/countershaft pin is whats going to cost.

Some updates.

First with my dad.

The scan showed 1cm of growth in the tumor in the last 2 months since he has been off chemo. He said its still way smaller than before he started chemo so things are doing ok.

Last weds he started chemo again. This time its a different mixture due to the numbness the last round of mixture caused. After 7 rounds he will have another scan to see whats happening. He's still very positive..

As for the car. We are hoping the rear bumper shows this week.

He ordered a new radiator and horns.

I looked at the cost of fixing the trans vs. locating a used one. The cost of fixing the trans was about $100 more than finding another used unit. So we chose to just fix this one so we know what shape it will be in and not have get another pile thats worn out like the one that was in it. Those parts should be here this week too.

The 20th they are supposed to start putting up the new building that the car will sit in so it will be fully protected from the elements.

Thanks for the support
