Do diesels really last forever?

Wyatt, no damn way you will get those numbers out of a newer ( 05 and up) diesel truck. Yours is still before all the emissions crap, so I guess it is possible. Also if you factor in the extra cost of a diesel vs gas as an option in 3/4 ton truck you are just barely breaking even at your 19.9 mpg claims. And again, no way you get that with the new emissions **** on these things...

Also values are down on ALL trucks and suv's, so it is a buyers market for all of them, not just a diesel. The gas trucks are even cheaper than the diesels and always will be. I guess there is less of a spread in TX, but down here it is 80-90 cents difference in gas vs. diesel, which lowers your numbers a good bit.

I have a real world example because I traded in the 07 diesel for the 06 gas. Guess what, better mileage towing and around town in the gasser, with cheaper fuel. Gasser has gotten 15mpg mixed driving, Diesel 13mpg. Towing gasser gets 11.5, diesel got 9.5. Pretty easy choice when the truck cost me $9k less than my CTD trade.

**** the red stuff cost almost has much as the green stuff here in town. Only like a 20 cent difference.
I used to run the red stuff when I had my dodge. I could get it for 89cents a gallon.

If you decide on a diesel i would look at the condition of the truck and how well the engine was maintained. Diesel's can last for a long time if they are well maintained. I've seen alot of hot shot trucks come through our shop with 300+ miles and most of the guys can tell how many miles they have since their last oil change and fuel filter change right there on the spot, these two things are the life of a diesel engine. Then on the other hand i have guys with no clue who bring their trucks in with low miles and the trucks barely run, won't even hardly start, you put a new fuel filter in it or in the case of the 7.3 you may add oil too b/c of the HPOP, and there back rolling again. You give them a little info on maintenance and send them on their way.

I wouldn't be scared of miles on a diesel, I'm more worried about how well the guy that had it before maintained it.

Diesel fuel is more costly but there is no substitute for the power these trucks make, especially in the hills of eastern Kentucky. You get a gas truck in the hills and the milage is going to drop off, but the diesel will still be the same as it normally would be with a load behind it and it'll pull better.

I wouldn't be worried about the dodge tranny, as long as it hasn't been in a truck with stacked chips make'n close to 200+ hp over stock. The dodge tranny is no worse than the Allison or the ford tranny. If the truck is stock you'll be fine, when you start adding chips adding over 100hp on any of the three transmissions you'll be looking at upgrading to a triple disc torque converter and throwing a shift kit or valve body in it and you'll be ready to roll.

just my .02

whatever you do, don't buy a 6.5 turbo GM hunk of ****. I bought a suburban in Baltimore, Maryland online off of a wheelin' forum... drove 3 hours through the mountains and the motor blew. I just have a personal thing against those kennedy diesels now.

i've got probably 200k in 6.5's and they suck. My tally 3 turbos, 6 tranny, and a handful of cracked heads. They are junk.

My question is why do you feel you need a Diesel? Your buggy hardly weighs anything. Why not a gasser?
If I was buying a truck tomorrow and was going to DD it and Tow every now and then I would buy a newer Z71.
John G. pulls his single seater and jeep with his Z71.

Gas? pfft. Gas is for your trail rig. Do you really Need a $50k buggy? It's not about what you need. You know you want a tow rig that get 20 mpg empty, will more than likely last 300-500K miles, run on real alt fuels (not some ethanol bs) and can be turned up to make 400+hp/1000ftlbs-pulling whatever hills there are around here in OD. Can't do that with some crappy gas motor.

I agree and thats why I have my Duramax. However it only gets about 15mpg empty around town and about 10 or 11 towing my old jeep. I love my diesel and don't plan on selling it. Nothing like having a programmer with 10 levels and this 10th being 250HP and no defuel between shifts. Did I mention my Allison hates me. ;D

I bought a diesel at when most people would think at the worst time, but I did get a heck of a deal on it. I am completely happy with it. I am getting 16.6 calculated around town, better than my 1/2 F150 was getting. On the highway at 72 mph get around 18.2, back it down to under 70 it goes up to 18.8 mpg. I towed my heep to OK and back at 12.5 mpg. I am happy all the way around.

Cole, werent you telling about the guys yanking the emissions off the new D-maxs and it making huge improvements to mpg?

That would be my plan. I would ditch everything on that bitch. Even though I live in an emissions tested county, diesels are exempt.

Bottom line

This hobby eats money like no other I have ever been involved with. I don't envy you ****ers sometimes. Granted I am also jealous as fawk a lot of the times also. molaugh

I guess you could and probably through your warranty out the window. No substitute for diesel power, that is not the arguement. I know the total cost to own is much cheaper with the gas trucks, at least based on my experience with 2 diesel tow rigs. I made the decision to put the majority of my money in my trail rig and not a tow rig, but to each their own...

What year? A friend of mine has an 05, his millage went from 15-16 to over 20 on the hwy when he switched to a ppe chip from an edge. Also fixed all his check engine light and other dealer related problems.

A friend found a truck like this for me.

2004 duramax, allison, 2500 4x4. extended cab long bed $6,800
it has been completely stock its whole life, no boxes or programmers to wear things out. Up until last week, it was in daily use.
