• Help Support Hardline Crawlers :

Elbe on the chopping block?

Bottom line we need a new cash cow to sub stain what we have and the access pass will do that for us.

Have any funds from the forest pass been redirected?

how would we know? LOL

But seriously, the NW forest pass is a federal level deal. The state can't touch it anyway, (unless someone can show otherwise).

Now, a state level pass, knowing what our state did with NOVA. I would consider that a higher risk for being "stolen".

While I am for a pass of sorts, I really only want to see it happen with very strict limits on what and where those funds could be spent on. (I'm not talking 4x4 or even ORV only)

That is Federal....Waaaaaay different.

The Hikers don't support the DNR/WDFW pass being proposed. http://www.wta.org/action/action-alerts/DNR%20petition%20/view

The Explore WA pass was pitched to WOHVA by Mark Mauren (DNR) and Jennifer ?? (WDFW). It would only be an added $5 for anyone with a Hunting, Fishing, or watchable wildlife pass.

I can save all of us $6. Just buy this: https://fishhunt.dfw.wa.gov/wdfw/ww_decal.html for $29 and add the $5 DNR part. How much money do you think DNR will actually see? They will get about 50% of what is left after the administrative costs for the pass that the WDFW would administer. DNR and WDFW will split the fees. This means DNR *might* get $2.50 from any of the groups not paying the full $40 for a pass.

I don't think I will be getting my hopes up that this pass will solve all of our money problems.

I think thats the only concern I have gotten from folks--funds go and stay to there designated places. I think thats will be the only hard sale for the distrust we have over the nova funds fiasco.

And WDFW cops have been patroling Walker and Tahuya this past week or so. It sounds like they know they are being merged with DNR and figure they can write some ORV tickets easier than fishing/hunting ones.

Seems like a cash cow for WDFW..... NOT the DNR.

Where is stipulated how the funds are broken up? Because from what I have seen (the proposal) I don't see that.(and as of right now there is nothing official on the table till next week).

There's been one at Elbe for several months now... I first met him back in September I believe...

He stopped and thanked me for being part of the volunteers working on the trails... He also liked the fact that we started doing something about the trail system that we use...

Nice enough guy, but he was totally unaware that we had been doing this for years and years before he came along...

From the lips of Mark Mauren himself. Did he not come to RTW and pitch the plan? He was hoping that by talking to the bigger org's ahead of time he could get them to support it. I don't know of any that are yet other than RTW if you are. He said the first couple years would be an even split between agencies and after that they hope to have enough data from a survey when you get your permit so they can divide it more fairly.

For sustaining what we already have? Yes it most likely would be. It'd be nice though to see hunters, shooters, and other users required to pay for this pass as well. They're using the facilities just as much as we do.
As a hunter, I can say I already DO pay DEARLY for the PRIVELEDGE to hike my rifle/bow around in the woods for no apparent reason. :redneck:
And a small amt more to help another passion of mine is worth it, if the money stays where it's intended to go...

This is all very simple. Privatization. Make walker private. Make elbe private. What would be interesting is if someone did a study with funny money performing collection at elbe and walker for a weekend. It'd also be a good chance to see how effective collection could be.

See how much money they make in the weekend and what the responses of the users are.

If its enough money in a weekend or two that could be extrapolated into a sustainable fund for that area, I'd pitch that to DNR and see what we could do.

It's amazing that there has to be drastic measures about to happen before many people even pay attention.

Doesn't amaze me. A lot of this shock and awe stuff happens behind closed doors, not in front of the public. So it's always a surprise to the public.

Try passing on information to people when you can't cite your sources without losing your sources. If it sounds bad, you get called a liar. ;)
