Elbe Rock crawl and Rainier Vista

If we were to get a machine up there saturday what would be more beneficial, another mini or a bigger machine?

Absolutely for another part of the project. On the hill climb a lot of the rocks were deposited at the location but we simply ran out of time to get them all dug in. A mini or slightly larger machine would be able to easily get on that trail. The task is to take a scoop of dirt out to cradle the rock so that it doesn't roll every time you drive over it. A slightly larger machine could grab a few of the rocks from the bottom of the hill climb to haul up and dig in.

Do you think you may have something that you can use or get?

I figured i could ask the boss, worst he can say is no.

I can be out there Friday morning if you could use my help.

Horus, I don't mind getting all the help we can, but there's limited stuff for people to do with a single excavator.

If we have a few people already there, that is probably enough. If we can find a second excavator to be out there, you're time would be put to better use.

I never want to say no to help but I want to make sure that help is used wisely.

We may have a crew out there on Saturday doing what you talked about on the trail last weekend. More bodies would be more useful at that time.

I understand. If I can be of help let me know.

I got a 120 size excavator and an operator (JeffroAdams) lined up for this Saturday. Let me know what time we should be there Saturday. Thanks RPD.

Fantastic! Let me work on that.

Hey Horus, can you be out there on Saturday instead of Friday?

Just got back from Elbe.. Walked up N looked at the rocks on the Rainer Vista. N i hate to be that guy but i dont think the ones stacked in the middle of the trail toward the top are safe or placed in a good location.

I will list my reasons why.

(1) No winch point
(2) They have been their 3 days N some one allready went off the path
(3) The way that hill climb is with no boarders trees/stumps. boot leg byepass will be a problem
(4) roll over danger is high.

Dale im not sure if youve seen these particular rocks but i feel it should be adressed soon.

Yes, I will be there Saturday.

Working on being up there Friday afternoon for wheelin and camping.

Casey, we noted all the same issues Sat. night. We did what we could with only a mini exc. We need to lay logs on either side to keep people on track and make sure it doesn't lean towards the cliff as it does now. Haven't talked winch anchors yet but it will be addressed. Friday and Saturday should yield some major progress.:awesomework:

Are you talking about the long or short section?

Those were only temporarily dropped there waiting to be dug in. I was hoping that they'd get to that last Sunday but they didn't get that far. That pile wil be spread out and dug in. This should be addressed by the end of this coming weekend thanks to people who are volunteering their equipment. One of the keys is going to be eventually getting a good gatekeeper on each end but we have to progress one step at a time. The pile that was there on Saturday was easily navigated by Hoss, but I don't know if more was added to it on Sunday. If someone went around that pile, that had no business being on that trail. It's going to take a little time to get it all laid in place.

The trail is still under construction. All of these issues have been discussed and solutions brainstormed. As for the high roll over danger, I remember a WTF member rolling his vehicle in a parking lot.

Better than parking on a rock inhis drive way for picture time. Im not getting in a pissing match with you. I dont care for you no secret their. But we can both work toward a goal N be neatrul to each other. I was trying to make sure no one gets killed or injuried or Nancy makes it go bye bye because of illeagal bypasses. Thank you have a nice day:kissmybutt:

Winch Anchor points

Looks for some ideas and perhaps donations here.

Along the Rainier Vista hill climb, there is a long stretch with very limited winch anchor options, and they've never been needed before. There are however quite a few really solid stumps that we can use. We can't get straps or cable on these stumps but I'm thinking that a huge eyebolt threaded down a foot or more into these stumps will provide excellent long term anchor points for winches and we can put these on multiple points going up the trail.

I don't know where to get something like this so I'm hoping someone else does and perhaps could donate them for the cause. To install these, we'd need to drill a pilot hole down into the stump and then thread the eye bolt down into the stump to at the eye is sitting just above the wood. We could paint these red or yellow so that they are easily visible to someone looking for an anchor point.

So who can help us out here?

That trail was logged well over 15 years ago. Those stumps are well on their way to being rotten. If you do find some that are not. Imagine a heavy rig like Coreys winching off that pull point it will most likely split the stump in halh and send a eyelet hurling the truck direction.

Buried ecology blocks with eyes or cables have been used for winch points at Tahuya and top of the Sunrise trail.

I have a couple... I don't know if Ralph can haul them down there at the same time. I have a couple that where half size that would be perfect but I don't know if they have eyes or cables in them. I'll have to check.

As far as the stumps go, there were several that I think were suitable. They were only about 12" out of the ground and about 2' in diameter. They appeared suprisingly solid at first glance and if we bury the eye in deep enough it's not going to go anywhere quickly. I think the tell tale test would be drilling the pilot hole. If we drill into mush... we'll that pretty much says it all right there.
