Depending on the programmer it may be fooling the computer in the truck. I had an Edge w/attitude in my 2003 Duramax and it made my truck computer mileage 25 percent off. Tell him to check it manually.
EXACTLY. I haven't trusted the truck overhead since I bought it. fawk that. programmers lie.
In heath's cummins '02 with a 6 speed on the way from wyatt's wedding to ks we got 19.1 mpg at best (that was the 85-90mph tank) and 17.8 at worst. that could be the diff in when the pump kicks off before full or topped off. I think we were in the mid 18's (obviously). My 2000, otoh, get 15 highway and 12 town. it also spins dual tires. hitit I got 12.4 weighing 17.5K on the way back from ft. bragg and ranged from 11-14 one tank.
Milage diesels are earlier year duramaxes, 96-98 cummins, 03/early 04 cummins (not 04.5 600 series) and some powerstrokes. all the ones I listed are capable (and I have seen with mine own eyes) 20+ mpg.
my dodge wouldnt' hit 20 if you let it idle and dropped it out of an airplane
I have heard good things out of the new new dodge, but those could be unsubstantiated rumors
I still want an '03/early '04 black dually cummins, easily capable of 23. ramble off

Yo Matt....were the 06' Cummins the same motor? I need to check but I've got a few Bullydog Dog downloaders leftover from my dealer days and I know one is a 06' Cummins with the "Outlook Monitor". If it'll work for yours it'll be dirt cheap and it's brand new never opened or molested....maybe dryhumped a couple times but nothing major.

Greg the 06 and 07 have the same motor, let me verify with BD that it will work but I might take it off your hands if the price is right. Shoot me a PM about it.

Matt O what you need to do is get a gooseneck trailer and put two heavy ass rigs on it and find the biggest hill you can and run the fawk out of it till you think that your gonna blow it up!! Then after youve done that a couple times if you'll buy you an intake and a programmer of some sort ( i've got a bullydog in mine) and cut the converter off and put you a high flow muffler like a magna flow or something on it i will almost bet you that you will get better mileage. I've got an 07 with a six speed and 4.10 gears in it and mine is getting 17.5 to 18 on the highway unloaded BUT i broke mine in hauling because i know that makes a big difference. Somethings wrong somewhere cause you should be getting alot better fuel mileage than what your getting. When i bought mine back in Jan i hooked it up to my 36 foot Big Tex that weighs probably 6K or more and put my cab tractor on it that weighs about 14k and run the **** out of it and got that motor hotter than dammit to help break it in. When i got home you could smell **** burnin because i got the motor so hot. But let me know if i can help, i've got a buddy in Cleveland that owns a diesel shop where i get all my work done and he can help with any mods you might want to make to it

I'll go down to the Kemar building today and get those downloaders and shoot you the info on what I got...I've got several....might be something some other folks here want.

Thanks Greg, get back with me on the part number and I will check with bully dog to make sure it works with an 07 5.9. Don't really want the outlook monitor so much, but it it is cheap enough I may do it. Lunch I hear what you are saying, I think I need to do that. Is your truck a 6.7 or 5.9? Maybe I will come up to the farm one day and we could load up one of your big trailers and go break this bitch in. I am seriously looking at a programmer and if Greg can get me a hookup I will go ahead and get one.

My 04.5 CTD got 19mpg going to the beach a couple of weeks ago. Towing to Summertown last new years I got a little over 10mpg doing 75-85mph with a Rhino and Unlimited on the gooseneck. I have an Edge Juice with an A2 monitor. I am in need of a torque converter something bad. If I had a new one it would help by a mile or so. Later.

Daniel

Mines a 5.9 I didnt want a 6.7 because i knew what the 5.9 would do. I'll let you borrow my programmer if you want to and you can try it out.

that is amazing for the 04.5. the early 04's are in the low 20's. color me jealous

OK, most of you guys know me and know I drive an 05 cummins. YES, I have a box. YES, it fools the overhead. YES, I hand calculate EVERY tank because it is my livelyhood. YES, I drive slow (65-70 tops)... I average 15.4 with my 21' enclosed car hauler behind me. I also pull a gooseneck (21ft, 5 ton) and empty average 17ish.. Last trip was to Chalmette LA.. Going down I was around 16.5 with 4200 lbs on the trailer running on B20 bio, at 65-70 MPH.. On the way back I had to rush to make the next load happen (75-80) but was empty. I averaged 15.4-- MPH made more of a difference than 4200lbs did. This has been my experience time and again on all my diesels. I have owned quite a few of these trucks, all of them dodges so theres where my experience stops.

Matto-- Something is wrong with your truck. Take it to the dealership and have them flash the computer. There is a reflash that will help. I know you liked your Dmax but I think in the long run you have a better engine in this one. Don't put a programmer on the truck until you break it in, otherwise you are asking for trouble. I put the box on mine at 20k (62k on it now) and it did NOT help mileag enough to warrant it, it DID help the fun factor.

We have a couple of these trucks (05-06 5.9's), and I have studdied them a bunch before and after we bought them. If you need any help give me a ring, you have my number..

Jason

Thanks for the info Jason, I actually tried to have it reflashed at Benchmark and they dicked me around and ending up not even touching the truck. Can anyone recommend another dealer and a service mgr to speak with around town?

BTW,when we went to the Hammers, Carl was pulling the Jimmy's buggy on a 20' gooseneck and the overall average mileage he got when I was looking at it on the return was just over 16 mpg. That is with a lot of 80 mph time and about 15% town driving.

Not bad IMO.

Oh, he has a 5.9 cummins with an auto. I think it was the last year before the 6.2L

Yeah, go to Greater Birmingham Chrysler,Jeep, Eagle... AKA Parkway dodge. They were real easy to deal with on mine. I told the guy what I do for a living and he understood that I needed the truck right and right now. They have ONE guy who works on the diesels tho, if he's out that day your screwed. I can get you the TSB on it if you would like, sometimes it helps to take them with you. Do you have an auto?

Jason

Yeah, 07 auto 5.9. Noticed a good bit of smoke, more than I think there should be, sluggish performance going uphill and this is all magnified when I have the trailer hooked up. I have yet to take it on a pure highway trip unloaded, but my best mix hwy/city driving was 13. Got 10mpg going to windrock with the cruise set just below 70. Got 9 MPG on the way back running a few mph faster.

Yep, somethings WRONG. BAD WRONG. Empty you should be in the 17 range, once broken in you should be in the 19 range. One good and bad thing about the auto is the OD ratio. Yours is a bit lower than my 6 speed. I think they changed it for the better in 07 but I'm not sure. The newest truck we have is an 06 auto. The auto will score you a couple MPG when empty but will cost you about the same when loaded. IF you had an aftermarket TC then the loss would be minute. The black smoke is normal for a diesel, especially an automatic. With an auto tranny its hard to spool the turbo which cools the burn and gets you closer to stoiochemically perfect. That black smoke you see (contrarry to popular belief) is NOT unburned fuel, it IS very HOT and still expanding fuel. I guess its more like partially/still burning fuel. Is your truck a 4x4 and/or a dually? Either way, definately have it looked at...

Jason

2500 Mega Cab, 4x4 with 315 AT's. I know the bigger tires don't help but they should not be hurting me that bad. A lot of my driving is stop and go, because I am off 280 now and the traffic sucks. I probably average 60% hwy and 40% city on a tank full. If you have any info on the TSB then send it over. Anything will help.

The tires do hurt some. Have you had your speedo re-calculated? They will charge you to do this but it shouldnt be much, maybe free if you talk to the tech himself. I'll send you that TSB.

Jason

Yeah they re-calculated it as close as they could. Something about it being harder to do on the new trucks. That said, I have checked it with a GPS and it reads 5% low so I add that back into my hand calculated MPG numbers.

Matt, is that pulling your new trailer with 1 rig? I got better fuel mileage pulling two rigs with my Duramax on a heavy dual wheel tandem axle trailer, and I have never been accused of being "easy on the throttle".
