Those aren't Toyota drive slugs up front are they? You running an FJ80 front? How's that working for ya?

Storage is a big issue.......Like mine sits outside under a tarp. laughing
I can't imagine wyatt, living in suburbia hell with too many cool ass rigs like the 58 and rivi and wifey's new rimmed up tahoe and needing places to put **** :flipoff1:
yep P, Kind of what I meant (restated adn regurgitated) about its where you wheel. aetna and the hammers prove that.

Again it comes down to what you wheel what you want. I dont want huge tires that walk everything easy... no challenge in that to me. thumb.gif

I want a smaller rig than I had that is less effort to haul, store, deal with in general too laughing

My current rig is what Ive always dreamt of owning for the most part, Im stoked to finally be doing it.

I have huge tires :flipoff1: The challenge comes from trying to keep it on all 4

Yeah, that's an FJ80 front. So far I've broken wheel hubs studs and a ring grear. I *hope* I'm past that as I've addressed the reason for each issue. The longfields look like new. It's not in the pic but I put a an FJ80 e-locked rear in the back when I redid the links (they don't hang below the frame rails down anymore) and stretched the wheelbase.

I like my rig as much as anybody has ever liked theirs, except maybe this guy: http://youtube.com/watch?v=h5sOCEUpGZI laughing . I really do think it's cool. However, sometimes it seems less cool when I struggle or fail on something that other guys are making in their bigger rigs.

THANK YOU molaugh molaugh
I'm laughing my ass off over here. that vid was FUNNAY molaugh made my day, time to work now

Sometimes I think a long wheelbase is a great band-aid for a heavy rig or a rig that has a poor suspension design.

You cannot ignore the fact that one of the best hill climbers in all of We-Rock is Jason Paule wth his 103'' wheelbase. Good suspension design, proper engine placement and sticky tires go a long way.

bring that rig to aetna dirt and I will laugh at your hate :flipgotcha:

:disclaimer: the above statement wasn't meant to further deteriorate your non opinion leader status or magnify your hater status, it was a joke and I have never even BEEN to aetna :flipoff1:

Your gay laughing

I do agree with a part of this. Tims little pink buggy is some where around this wheel base.

I think wheel base is personal preference. Most people like the long wheel base because it is much more comfortable when making steep climbs.

I know when I built the black buggy Bob was pretty stuck on around 118-120 but I think it would have been just as good around 114-116 but I knew the added wheel base would give him some more confidence and thats why I went that way.

Are you ignoring the fact that extreme hill climbers (motorcycles and Icelandic buggies) tend have longer wheelbases?

I have said here, and was beat up for it, that the wheeling that was in those videos at Grayrock from last week has more in common with those two above sports than the rockcrawling that I enjoy.

Are we talking about rockcrawling or climbing pea-gravel/mud covered hills?

I can understand Nolan's opinion about the two mentioned sports. For me I'm glad it is getting this way. Hell I would move to Norway for a little bit just to do the Volcanic insane hill climbing. I wish we had that terrain here. I do understand that not every one would want to do it, but I'm already addicted and all I have seen is videos.

That's the challenge in all of this. It's easy to make a rig that runs cream puff. It's easy to make a rig that runs a technical rock garden. It's easy to make a rig that climbs crazy hills. It's hard to make a rig that does it all. So the question is, "In which way do we see buggies evolving?"

I predict that they'll get bigger. I think if somebody with a 118" wheelbase and 42" sticky tires went to AZ and easily ran all the killer waterfalls that are rarely ever conquered that a trend would be set. Suddenly what was impressive would be ordinary and the guys out there aren't the sort that settle for being ordinary. Heck, in my area I feel like I'm already seeing that trend and Pat's buggy was part of it.

Boy, this thread is off-topic.

It is nice that you see my point and that it is not hating or bashing. The sport that your crew is doing is the US version of Formula Off Road. Hell, that video of Cameron at Woodlee's (is that your place?) going up the side of that mountain....that totally looks like Formula Off Road to me.....that or dune climbing. For years, there was a segment of guys that I wheeled with that loved going to Poteau Mtn and Disney, but did not like wheeling in Clayton. It was all about Big Tires and Big Wheelbase.

The wheeling at Poteau is a lot like SE wheeling. Folkes designed their rigs around High HP, High belly clearance and long Wheelbases. Saying the trend is going toward that is funny, because that is what most of the fist HUGE Rockwell rigs were built for. Remember the Big Meat runs when they only allowed 44" tires or bigger? Waggoner machine shop? Man, I have wheeled with them for years and they literally would not let me on the Big Meat runs with my 42" tires! First time they allowed smaller tires, a group of us went up there with light buggy's with 40's and stomped all over some Big Meat ass on the hills that they said COULD NOT BE DONE with smaller tires than 44's and 125" wheelbase.

It is scary as hell nosing up to a 5' ledge in the middle of a 250 yard climb with 100" of wheelbase and stomping and praying. Feels MUCH better in a rig with 20" more wheelbase.......

Vangard, as for Arizona, most of the guys in the BTG group run 110-118" wheelbases already. They have gradually moved higher and higher. Chris is convinced that anything under 110" sucks out there. I disagree because I have done most everything out there that I have had the priveledge to try with a 106" WB. Tracy Jordan cut most of the insane trails out there with a rig with 105" WB and continues to wheel to this day with 103".

I will agree with your above post nolen. I think that a 106" is doable for most. that is my bottom limits. I like to hit **** with crazy speed sometimes and it wont work for me. it takes longer to go over backwards at 116 than 106. I don't see a trend of longer rigs anywhere but the east coast either vangaurd. that's just me. I see a trend of lower more compact cog rigs evolving out, ie, buggies.

all that said, there are 2 different sports, hill climbing and rock crawling. vangaurd said the cats ass is when you can do both proficiently. that's where I wanna live. be able to go south, east or west and run
