Take the 12v out of the dodge and drop it in a Ford truck. Set for life...

Re: Opinions on 12v cummins

they are a turd in stock form but are very reliable and will far outlast the truck wrapped around it. The 12 valves are not very expensive to get good reliable power out of as long as the transmission/ torque convertor or clutch behind it is built.

Or a square body Chevy and confuse the youngsters when you roll coal. ;D

Re: Opinions on 12v cummins

I had one for years and absolutely loved it, it was turned up and ran with any new truck and had no issues other then general wear items , I got an 04 now, I doubt I can even work on it there's wires everywhere , the 12v was super simple

Re: Opinions on 12v cummins

I love my 12 valve. Mine has 349k on it and I would change the oil and take to California tonight in it. Now the dodge truck sucks I plan on motor swapping into a old school Chevy or new ford which ever. Go for it. Look at comp diesel they have any information you could want on a diesel.

Shoot, try working on an LS and that '04 will still seem stone age. Its the newer ones with all the emissions crap that scare me.

I think NWFLYJ's 12-valve is approaching 500,000 miles now.

Re: Opinions on 12v cummins

I've transplanted a 96 cummins in my tow rig and after doing it I would highly recommend it. They are stupid simple and reliable. I'm running mechanical gauges and shut the damn thing off manually. Took the grid heater off as well. I believe all the wire I got going to it is starter and alternator no computer. Got tired of having somebody working on my power strokes. Bought it with 150k and have put 30k plus dumbass hard miles on it.

Re: Opinions on 12v cummins

Get it buy a good clutch turn it up alittle do the big air filter and rock out !!

Re: Opinions on 12v cummins

Switch to manual fuel shut off and only park on hills so you can bump start it and you won't even need a battery :****: But seriously change the oil and it will last 1,000,000 miles

Re: Opinions on 12v cummins

Most of you all with the 12 valve don't realize what they will REALY do. I have one in a 97 trackoe. It's the 140 hp version. 48,000 lb machine with a 5.9. That's pretty brave. Pull the ears back on this baby at 7:00 in the morning and don't shut her off till dark. Been doing that all it's life. Had the wrong breather in it for two years and gutted the cylinder walls and got a lot of blow by. Tore it down, honed the cylinder walls new pistons and rings and bearings. Cost $700.00 for all the parts. That was 6 years ago, still going strong. Had a break in the intake hose leading to the turbo. Rep,aced it and checked turbo shaft play,,,, had 1/2 inch wobble, yes I said 1/2 inch. NO loose of power. Installed new turbo could not tell a bit of difference. Did you hear that Cummins took a 5.9 with 310,000 miles on it and dissembled it, checked all the clearances and reassembled it and it required NO new parts. I am a ford man but I like the 5.9!!!

Re: Opinions on 12v cummins

I tow with a 97 with right at 200k and love it. Like others said, keep good oil in it and you'll be good. I've done normal wear and tear stuff, straight piped it, BHAF and turned it a little, got a fuel plate just to lazy to install it. It pulls my trailer like it's not there most of the time. Looks a lot like a SRW version of that one, even the same color.

Re: Opinions on 12v cummins

Get it, do a fuel plate, afc mod. and most of all a 4k GSK and some valve springs, and you will have plenty of engine. Oh, first and fore most, pull the timing chain cover to ensure that the killer dowel pin mod. has been done.
