Its a preference. I would recommend getting one with engine braking.

Re: Reverse valve body

The reverse manual valve body was originally designed for things that go so damn fast, all you can do is pull the shifter rather than push it forward.

Are you REALLY able to go that fast? C'mon meow

Re:

Aren't they supposed to be good for going from first to reverse in rollover applications? I want one but they're not as cheap for my 700 as they are the 400 and 350s.

Thats the reason i got one.....

I wish I had done the reverse swap when I rebuilt mine so 1st and reverse were closer together so I could "rewind" quicker.
But I crawl not bounce...so can't speak for racing.
I can't see it being a disadvantage tho....

They come in handy when you're going over backwards, and once you get used to it there won't be any disadvantages

The main difference assuming you have a TH350 or TH400 is that you can put it in 2nd and it will start in 2nd, not 1st.

Your trans shouldn't shift to third now unless you are in 3 and then it should make the progression but when pulled down in gear it shouldn't shift past that gear.

I have a manual valve body now, I've had reverse, and one I got used to the manual I like it as much, but I have engine braking, I think it's a must, it's just like a standard with no clutch

Re:

I have a reverse manual valve body with engine braking in a TH350 in my buggy. I like it for quick reverse banging and I like the engine braking on long decents. That being said, when "feeling out" a hill I will hit it and then roll back. With the RMVB if I don't knock it into neutral it will kill the engine. While bombing down access roads its a little aggravating to me b/c if you let off it slows down hard, or on the downshifts it drags the rear tires if you are out of the throttle. I wouldn't put one with a brake in if I had it to do over. I don't see any advantage to having it in a race buggy.

My th350 has manual valve body and I really like it. When ya need wheel speed quick...short launches,slick,etc...comes in real handy. Don't think I'd like reverse manual cause I usually climb in high gear and that makes neutral and reverse too far away. Crawling I think it would be good. That's just my $.02

X2, exact same setup.

Manual helps because you can skip first and start in second like others have said. I do not like the engine braking it is harder on the trans and driveline because it's not a gradual brake it usually slides the tires ESP when you hit first! I've ran reverse pattern but not forward manual not sure how it would work going from 2nd to 3rd then reverse at partial or wot? It's just another preference being able to put the trans in drive and letting it shift itself with both hands on the wheel is the other side of the discussion.

same. actually prefer normal manual valve body. prefer crawling/trail riding in 2nd or 3rd and it's a non-issue when in low range. bumping ledges and hill climbs are much easier that way as well for wheel speed. also still easyto get to reverse quickly.

When I bought my th350 I thought it was reverse vb or was told it was. After I've ran a regular vb I'd never run a reverse. Buy it's what I'm used to. I can get to reverse just as fast.

feel the same way. don't think I'd like a RMVB. hit the rev limiter too fast in just first gear (5.38s, th350, atlas 3.8 ) in low range

The part I can't get is when woods riding or climbing...is why would you wanna go through lower gears to try and get to neutral or reverse? Just doesn't make sense to me, but I ain't real bright! ??? :drinkers:
