Single ended or Double ended

i have had both SE and DE rams. the SE ram did not work for me no matter what i did, but then again my front is welded (cheap ass). the single ended ram was a farm ram so that might have been my problem. After being frustrated as hell i decided to try a DE ram. I found one at Surplus Center I is a 2.5 bore and 8" stroke to my door was $220. the ram also has mounts already on the cylinder so it makes it easy to mount with (4) 9/16" bolts. it might or might not work on your application but it has worked perfectly on mine. As for a pump i just used a factory chevy pump drilled out and a regular trans cooler. it has worked great and has never given me a bit of problem, a big suprise especially since my stering links are homemade and my front is welded. Can't beat 1 to 1.5 turns lock to lock with one finger

okay everyone has there setup so here is mine... i run a SE ram, cheap bailey ram, but i run it behind the axle, onto a double ended BTF high steer arm... the clevis style ends actually goes around the arm so it keeps for tight packaging... yes matt o. those are more 1" bolts... please contain your exitement... :D

I really like the idea of putting it behind the axle. I have been thinking about that alot with a SE Ram.The BTF arm is perfect for that.
Also 1" bolts are where it's at thumb.gif

Buy a good orbital and either will make you happy.... Dont rob any orbitals off of JD Combines, them fuggers take like 5 billion turns from lock to lock , you can drive mine sometime and youll see how much suck it brings.

If its free its P...

( I got a free Danfoss to swap out but the fab time required column switch/ steering shaft has kept me from it for now probably do that change up this winter )

SE ram's take a different amount of turns from lock to lock. Just something to think about.
As I understand, it also wont self center like a properly set up double ended ram. I like my steering wheel to go to center when I let go, just like a cr.

If your toe-in and caster are right it will. I have had 3 SE's and all 3 have centered and driven fine.

I am a fan of the SE ram for packaging. I like that it is up and out of the way or behind the axle.

with a SE, I wouldn'/t run anything but an AL tie rod. not after this weekend seeing wyatt stand the whole rig up on its nose on the tie rod and it came right b ack :woody:

Meaning the memory of the material is better ? What material is he running and ends... now Im curious LOL

1 3/4" 7075 everywhere but my rear lower links they are 2", yes thats a 7075 tierod. I need to recheck the heims on the tierod but I'm 99% sure they are 3/4" and not 1" like on the links.

7075 has damn good memory!

over winter Id "like" to do hy steer arms and protection for my ram... this may be another upgrade if I can swing it. Damn proper steering cost ALOT of fuggin money. laughing1

Hell it all cost a lot of money

Paul, I'd like to go high steer as well. Seems like I push into my tierod all the time.

that first run, when you came down the eliminator climb, you went to descend adn rammed the buggy into that pointy center rock full force. it stopped you from about 10mph. bent the rod back into the housing (like 5") I was worried as **** the whole run it was going to let go on you but didnt'. I'm impressed. **** a steel rod. AL is where its at if you HAVE to have one. I still like the DE.

Better yet, put it all behind the axle if you can fit it in there.

How do guys normally do that?

I dont think I can remotely fit it there. HP60 and the top of my links tuck between the radiator and the front pulley on the motor. The clearance on everything on my junk is TIGHT!
Maybe a high front tierod, and I can bury a single ended ram behind the axle....on the side opposite the pinion.

There was a thread about single vs double on pirate, which I got to thinking more about a single for mine, because I already have a mount, for my 1.75 PSC assist ram, so it would be cheaper and easier to mount (no $$$ truss). So I am thinking more and more about a single ram with an AL tie rod. How are people mouting the ram to the tie rod, obviously cant weld steel tabs to it. Tube clamp?
