This thing has been haunting my mind since Wyatt posted up about it and we PM'd back and forth. Let me lay it all out there, for years I have wanted to build a ratrod style driver. I have wanted some old sheetmetal that no one cared about that I could put together a driver and a fun time at the dragstrip occasionally vehicle. Well Wyatt being the hookup in the hot rod community type guy he is found a freebie 49 5 window Chevy truck Cab that had been chopped and not completed. His guy tells him if he will get it out of his garage he can have it. Long story short, Wyatt picked it up and is holding it pending my travel to Tejas to get it ( a big thanks for retrieval, storage, and general awesomeness is due Wyatt... your the f'n man ! thumb.gif ) Amber got the news of an upcoming road trip last night.. laughing1

Now most folks ( my wife included ) would look at this and want to hurl. Understandably so, Im sure it will become a money pit far before I drive it. Its not particularly nice to look at , and really isnt much to start from! In my warp'd eyes I see the start of some real good times and alot of challenge to learn , fabricate and build something I've never built before.
I do have a visual image of the vehicle I want to build from this.... I just cant easily explain it and without having it in my possession just yet, I cant commit to a few things until I put a tape measure on it.

The things I do know, it will have a box frame main chassis ( rear may end up tubular built off of that to fit suspension design I want and the style of bed I think would look cool ) I will build the bed myself, but it really wont be much, something following the looks of a model A bed and allowing for sizable tires in the rear . Rear suspension will be 4link obviously and the front I am still trying to hash out, I read a very descriptive article on a straight axle using 2" .250 wall chromoly that kinda has me leaning towards building my own in this manner. I think for simplicity and cheap-ass sake the rearend will be a JY 9" . I also plan to take my dad up on his offer to actually put his 383 in a vehicle since it hasnt seen anything but an engine stand since the 90's . This motor is awesome, RHS Block, Dart 2 Heads, Lunati everything I will have to get the specifics as he built this while I was in S. Korea back in 1995... it was supposed to be good for 425hp as I recall and it was only in one car that never got finished and was parted. ( read a quick go through and its still a NEW engine for all practical purposes. ) Ill go with a TH350 and because Im gay for them Ill put a full manual valvebody in it .

The body work is still WAY up in the air, It will NOT have front fenders... I dont really know what Im going to do for a front "Grille" but I will put a hood on it.. ( from what year truck, Im still re-searching all that )

Dont know yet if I will chop off the top all together or leave and finish what was started. leaning towards the later since its kinda neat with the 3 windows in the back IMO. Again , Ill have to look at it and drink a beer and stare at it for several hours before a difficult decision like that is made. In any case, I wanted to get the thoughts out there and maybe some of the rodder types off the boards can shoot thoughts and opinions at me since Im outta my league on it. Im not going for any type of show truck, this will be a nasty driver that i can peel the fawk out in and not worry about if I get the urge to drive it to the Beach or whatever for some insane reason. It will not be comfortable, probably wont ride overly nice and generally make most people go... "why the hell did he do that ?" The only answer to that is because

IF ITS FREE ITS P !!! thumb.gif

The Cab that started it all !!!

I have a "ratrod" file on my puter of pics and stuff I like , here's a few things I like and inspire my thoughts...

the first dropped one and the rendering turn me off where the back of the cab sits so much lower than the front of the bedside. why not french some bed down to it or close to it? other than that, make the top removable with sharp edges on it and rust and everything :flipoff1:
I like **** like that too. I want one or something like it. I have a mighty mouse that needs a home as well.

I got a front end our of an early 80's with disc brakes and all that would work good for you steering and all. Was going for what your hoping for when I was in high school. Went to 4x4 instead. Have the front half of the frame with motor mount and all that I could let go for cheap if dad still doesn't have plans for it.

Sorry dude this is the last thing you need. To do a hotrod the right way costs a lot of money and takes a lot of time.

Oh brother! If I had the garage I would start buying fab tools to build something like this with my old man since he has the funds and time to go get the good stuff molaugh

with the ratrod style I believe it could be done, not so much on the "cheap" side but a lot cheaper than a restore since most things are JY parts anyway and odds and ends off the bottom shelves. with that being said I'd love to have a Ford A sedan ratrod like chopperman's over on pirate.

but with that being said I couldn't afford to get into hotwheels at this point and time :flipoff1:

hey p ive got a truck in the paint shop now, more or less chopped dodge....its a '57, being painted candy apple red with a mural on the back tail gate.....
ps the last pic is a rat rod on ebay

You mis-read the part about JY parts and ratrod. this isnt a "hotrod" the right way. this is a Ratrod the P way. :drinkers:

I have no time line, no budget and no worries. Its gonna be badass and if you hate on it I wont let you peel out in it ! :flipoff1: laughing1

Dunno if I can wait that long to put my own hands on it.... I got a few things in the works and a co worker thats interested and offering to use his nice as truck for the road trip ! :afro:

Right path = Dont care just for fun and kicks. im not interested in car shows or that, its just garage art and peel out for fun stuff for me to get a kick out of. thumb.gif

Made out of welded chain :woody:

Saw a heep YJ locally with chain supports to his small stinger and to best part he cut every other grill slat and put in a rectangular welded chain accent....then paint it all black. molaugh molaugh ::) **** needs mexichrome/gold

Sounds sweet, free motor is where it's at!!! Man buggy under 15k... ratrod under $5k... BALLIN ON A BUDGET SON!

The pimp engine offer made me really start thinking about this last year, past up a few possible old schools and then this came along and well... its awn now. laughing1

Sorry dude, none of these "projects" are ever done cheap. Sort your buggy out, go riding and have fun for a while before you start a huge project like this. Regardless of cost, it will suck time and energy.
