Now that our move back to MI is done, it felt like it was time to reexamine the thorn in my side... er... jeep. As some know, the jeep was on the verge of becoming a reliable weekend wheeler when Naches struck it down with violent and reckless abandon! Motor mount failure lead to fan destroying radiator while climbing what I believe was the snag at Funny Rocks thus causing a MAJOR overheat whilst getting towed back to camp. The jeep died as I rolled into camp and then onto the trailer and would not restart once back at home. Since that fateful day last July the jeep has not run, instead sitting useless like the red headed stepchild it has grown to be.

Now I've been having many thoughts lately about the future of the jeep... I've been assuming the motor is toast, I know the frame has cracks, there are still gremlins to be discovered. So what to do...? I want to get back out wheeling so one thought was to simply replace the 258 since everything else I already have would bolt up and get back out there. Then there's the thought of why not upgrade motor and trans if I'm spending money any way. Of course that leads to far more downtime. Then there's the thought... why not just save the hemoraging and buy a used buggy frame keeping my good parts of the jeep.

In the end, all I really want is be on the trail as soon as possible. So I ventured into the garage tonight to begin rediscovering my lovely jeep.

First out was the rad. Does anyone want a gently used delux CJ radiator?

How about a modified industrial application flexalite fan?

Got the headlight/turn signal wiring harness out of the way and thought to myself how it'd prolly be easier to punt the ****er and just wire in a couple of Hellas. We'll see...

She looks a lil nekkid

013800x600.jpg

Then I started getting a good look at stuff. Does this kink looking dealy bother anyone else or am I making stuff up? (please disregard the duct tape fixing a possible vacuum leak)

014800x600.jpg

Ah yes, the almighty CJ frame :redneck:

016800x600.jpg

Then again, the body wasn't much better. Should probably go ahead and get the cage tied into the frame sooner rather than later.

Now for the fun part. I tried turning the motor over by ratchet to see if it was seized and to my happy surprise, found it to turn over. So then out of morbid curiosity, I took out my battery which I knew to be beyond dead and hooked the cables up to the lovely LS1 sitting in the next stall

026800x600.jpg

And for the surprise of the night, the damn thing sounded like it wanted to fire. At this point, I turned on the propane and began cranking with weif's car running. I'd crank and crank and as soon as I'd let off, I'd hear the motor caugh sputter and die. Over and over it'd do that until finally with some persuasion of the throttle pedal, it fired to life and ran. I got some smoke out the exhaust which I was trying to decipher if it was do to coolant in the oil or just normal condensation from sitting. It didn't smell overly sweet like coolant, but I was so stoked to see life, I may have been overlooking the obvious. In any case, the damn thing didn't sound half bad... No obvious clicks or knocks that I could hear. Now this may just be a temporary moment of jubilation and I will soon be smashed back down to the cruel world of reality, but it is possible this particular 258 is of supernatural ability and on par with the illustrious 22re :haha:

I took a video which sucks horribly, but at least the sound is good:

After running for a minute or so (shut down before it could get too hot), I noticed this cute little puddle of oil which could either be normal for my plastic valve cover, or could be due to slight warping from the overheating event. I'm not sure which.

So where to go from here? Did I seriously luck out and what ever problem just solved itself? Was it something as stupid as a dead battery not allowing the motor to fire and run? Do I just need to replace the fan, radiator, and motor/tranny mounts to get back on the trail??? I sure as hell hope so but time will tell I guess...

Stay tuned for the comedy or errors that is my jeep

Buy a radiator. Throw all flex fans in the crapper, and get a good wrecking yard fan that's STEEL. Weld the crap out of that frame. Buy new motor mounts, drill a hole completely thru the brand new mounts, install bolt and lock nut (not nylock) allow a wee little bit of slack for flex. Reinstall motor mounts. Take the valve cover off, and silicone that puppy up real good, reinstall. Fix that kinky hose thing. Couple $$ hundred. Tops.

Go wheelin'.

Re-evalutate after.

What with the Propane and Jumper cables and all

X2 and you have that nice big back yard to test things out in now:cheer:

Sounds a lot like what I just went through with my jeep. It did run for a couple months with a warped head before the gasket gave up. Just run it and be ready for the day when it decides to run on fewer cylinders. :awesomework:

I wish my illustrious 22re would have fixed itself like your motor apparently has, but instead it still clatters and squeaks. :redneck:

Good info. Fwiw, the flexalite fan I had in it was one of their ones meant for larger diesel applications and basically has no flex to it at all. As for motor mounts, I still have the material to make my own (dom/bushings/etc) and just need to locate a welder friend since I can't buy my own just yet.

As for the pic... come AWN!!! Those are DOT approved propane tanks so they've gotta be safe!! :haha::haha::haha: It only sparked once hence the need for the bungie :redneck:

Gonna make the damn jeep earn it's keep haulin wood in the back yard until the dog is big enough to take over that duty :haha:

I can see it now:

Wief, coming home after a long day at work. Only sees the ruins of a house spread all over Nuzzy Estate.

Weif, "Eric, WTF happened?"

Eric, "Oh, I had a little problem with the propane tanks on the Jeep. It was just one little spark...."

:::Breaking news::: Local reporter, "We come to you now from the scene of a home explosion. Apparently, the woman of the house has come home and is now pummuling the snot out of the man of the house."

any progress? if you werent 5 or more (i donwannacount) states away, i would help you wrench on your junk (most literally).

Hopefully I can get some money out of my next paycheck for the fan and rad. Kinda in a tight financial situation right now just coming off the move :booo: I did find it funny though that you were totally right on the axle being slightly cocked when you said that a year ago. It's definitely somewhere between .5 to .75 of an inch further back on the passenger :redneck: Measured both from top of knuckle to front and top of knuckle to body. Guess I'll just be able to turn sharper right than left :haha:

PM me your new cell. Don't think I got that # when you changed

I wouldnt trust that motor Nuzz. Just get a replacement.

FWIW i towed him from funny rocks(it died on the snag) all the way back to mile marker 9 on rock creek road. He had to run the engine to steer. I got very very warm.

Man, Thinking back about that day. You sure had some bad luck breakage going on.

Not much didn't break that day for me :haha: Hell, I broke before we even drove out of camp :haha::haha::haha: I seriously can't believe the motor even fired up after the overheating abuse it went through. I may take it on some closer trips but prolly won't trust that motor on anything over 10 hours away. I'm keeping my eyes open for other 258s or motor/tranny combos

Keep lookout for AMC Gremlins, Pacers, Matador, Ambassador, Eagle station wagons..... etc. A decent running AMC can be had for very little as a fully running/driving car. Best bet is the Eagle SW.

But also, now is the time to do a V8 conversion. Look for any Jeep Grand Cherokee (the old, big ones). They were made up thru 1986. Your tranny and everything stays exactly the same. Just need some factory CJ motor mounts and a new radiator. Dump all the emissions crap, and get a decent carb and aaaaawwwwaaaaayyyy you go with real power, with a distributor on top instead of on the side down low, a much better intake system, and a factory York compressor already mounted and ready to pump tires.

Yes, your financially carefull right now. Very understandable...But this is the greatest idea under the sun. I heard car parts are damn cheap in yer area(find me a ls2)

New radiator IN.
New 160 amp alternator IN.
Taurus fan with all components ready to install.
Gauges ready to install.
Motor/tranny mounts laid out and ready.

tick. tick. tick... :stirpot:
