I really like the CJs so I am biased towards them. But I would need to know more about the Jeep to offer any sort of informed opinion.
The 80s CJs came from the factory with pretty crappy gear ratios. 2.73s, 3.32s. With the 258, you'd be lucky to have something as deep as 3.54s from the factory.
The transmissions in the 80s CJs are not much to write home about, either. The SR4 has a bad reputation, the T4 is weak, and the T176 is marginally decent.
The Model 20 in the rear came with 2 piece axles and if not already upgraded, could use aftermarket 1 piece axles.
The steering on these things always needs help. Especially with larger tires. 1 piece steering box mounts and maybe a brace.
The Dana 30 front end in the 80s CJs used a weaker locking hub setup.
Then there are potential rust and frame cracking issues.
Point is, it could need a bit of help and $$$ to be a reasonably competent wheeler and daily driver. Just some things to look for and take into consideration.
And maybe some of this stuff has already been addressed. As I said, I would need to know more.
I daily drove a CJ-5 in my younger years and loved it. These days, while I love my CJ-8, it's not something I really want to drive to work on a daily basis any more.
