Stock 30+ year old trans. I overheated it once pretty good, didn't want to pull and was slow to shift into gear. It sat for a day and has been fine for a couple weeks of mild abuse since. Today I wasn't nice to it, and it is doing some strange things and making some noise I have never heard one make.

Park=chattering til it engages, sounds kinda like someone clicking the top of a can, no noise after it engages.
Reverse= Golden. No noise, shifts right in no problems.
Neutral=Golden.
3rd(drive)= I can feel the trans click into gear, but no drive to the axles, makes a kinda scraping whoosh sound(spinning with something dragging on it) Rev it, and nothing but more noise at a faster pace
2nd= Pretty much the same as 3rd. Except it doesn't feel like it's trying to click into gear at all. Just the scraping whoosh sound.
1st= Clicks right in 9 outta 10 times and goes fine. 1 outta 10 it will make the scraping whoosh sound for about 2 secs and then click into to gear just fine.

Trans is good on fluid and it's still in 1 piece so I'm ruling out a broken case for now.

Anyone have any ideas on what/why it's fine in 1st but not the other gears?

Honestly, it doesn't much matter why... It's screwed... Time to rebuild or replace it.
I'd say you have torn something up and have metal trash it working on eating up the rest of the trans..

Yep. She gone. Sorry bud. And one do it. 2nd-3rd no dice wouldn't pull. Sounded like midgets in the trans with hammers. First would tho. Gotta rebuild it

Re:

Yeah she is gone, get you a reputable builder and save some time and cash. I built my own and had a lot of money and time in research, mods and literature but it works great and was a great learning experience for me just time consuming.

Update.....She WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY gone now. Got about 3-4 hours out of it today and it finally said done. Didn't feel like it was going into any of the gears,no more whoosh sound either :dunno:

Why?
You need the extra gear, have a TH400 laying or thinking the extra strength??

It will be a granny low sm465 if I do 4 speed it, 6.5:1 vs 2.whatever in the 350. Reliability is the biggest thing I guess. That 465 doesn't care if it's upside down or filled with water, it's gonna keep on pulling.

I might take a shot at rebuilding it myself cause I can't find anyone local that is worth a damn, and I dam sure can't afford to send it to PTC or whatever.

Everyone on the all mighty interweb acts like manual transmissions are not even an option anymore. I'm Rockin a 4 speed. I've driven it back to the trailer everytime I've had it out with no problems. I've actually came off a hill and people are like " damn I didn't relies you had a stick." More than once. I don't know if they are saying it in a good way or bad. It just shocks people you would build around a manual transmission. one guy seen me shifting into gear and he says " you got a clutch and eveything?" :dunno:

Gotcha .
Nothing wrong with a 465!!
I just assumed you meant 4 speed Auto, as in Th400 since you had a Th350 in it.
My bad on the ASSumption :driving:

700r and 4Lwhatevers are the 4 speed autos thumb.gif

I'm leaning pretty heavily towards a standard, just about everything is better in my book IF you can heel/toe. Less heat, cast iron goodness vs cast alum case on the auto, stout as hell in stock form, and it's cheap. We won't go into not being able to get reverse quick laughing1

Technically, an auto "acts" likes it's gears are 1.6-2.0 times as low as they really are, so you aren't gaining any crawl with a stick, at least not like you think you are... An automatic is dependable as the rising sun with a good cooler, pan, and fluid level... $100 says your cooling system sucks and that is how this whole deal started

Actually I watched him drain the auto and fill it with muddy water....
You can send me $50 and send the other $50 to the O/P...

Thx :woot:

Hang on a minute, how well does his muddy water cooler work? I bet he doesn't even HAVE one!

Ok ok, we'll cut you in for a third..... :****:

Bringing this back up.

My muddy water coolers work just fine guys, :flipgotcha: single fan,2 - 8x10ish coolers.

I swapped another 350 in, worked pretty good, had what felt like a binding issue in reverse, went away pretty quick. Romped on it for a little bit, then it blew the dipstick out the tube, along with 3-4 quarts pretty much emptying the pan. Topped back off, works awesome now. Beat the hell out of it for another hour or so, running along 2nd gear, hammer it, about 4500 rpm and it starts bucking and trying to lock up the wheels. Let it sit for a little while and it shifts to 1st fine, head up the hill slowly to load up and it starts bucking again. At this point it won't pull forward for anything, maybe 6" and it bucks back, hammer it and it goes no where.

Reverse pulls fine, which is strange because it gave me a couple issues really early in the day. I back up the hill to my trailer and junk, let it sit for a little bit, and now 1st and 2nd are trying to go backwards. Click it to drive and it does nothing. Reverse still clicks right in and pulls fine without any binding.
Is this a valve body issue, or something else?

What caused the dipstick to become a missile? I cleaned the vent out before it went in the truck, this is a far from new trans though. K case from a 80 something blazer with plenty of miles. Would this be a seal somewhere in the trans pressurizing the pan?

Blowing dipstick out w fluid..... WAY overheated....
Not likely a valve body issue alone... Sounds like ur still looking for a tranny...

I suggest you take both anchors to ur local trans shop n tell em to build you one and give you a core credit for the other.
