Turbo 350 issues.

****...that pan is more then I paid for the entire trans molaugh

I had my doubts about the one I swapped in, most people don't just swap a trans without there being an issue. The kid I got it from said he swapped it out because he wanted an overdrive trans.

I have one of the knock off lokar dipsticks. Now that I think about it a little bit, it doesn't lock down very well.

Since I'm 0 for 2 on them....I'd like to figure out why it's building so much heat that the coolers won't keep it alive. The first couple trips on the other trans went fine, I'd check the lines in and out the coolers and one would be HOT and the other was slightly warm. These trips were much less abusive then the last couple.

My junk is geared high, stock 2:1 with 3.XX in the axles on 38s, the gearing is the actual problem isn't it? It seems like the convertor never gets locked up crawling around at 13-1400rpm or cruising trail to trail at 900-1k rpm. I kinda remember guys talking about killing transmissions the first trip out because the converter was building so much heat?

Did you flush out your entire system when you put in this transmission? And do yourself a favor and just have it rebuilt, you just wasted a bunch of time and money, a used transmission is a core in my mind, I would never put one in without having it at least looked at by a transmission shop.Around my town you can have a 350 rebuilt cheap, and make sure you put in a new convertor when you get it fixed, if not the old one will still have all of your old broke parts stored up in it just waiting to take out your new transmission.

Re:

X2 on flushing the system. Your coolers could be clogged and causing your problems. My buddy trashed a rebuilt transmission within 50 miles and found out that was why. Can't remember reading this or not but do you have a trans temp gauge?

Bigger cooler
Better gears
Fresh trans

3.08 and 2:1 gears are fine for 31's and light trail use but 38''s n serious wheelin ain't gonna work.

If you ARE gonna try to keep running that combo, at least get a trans temp gauge and stop n idle when it gets over 200*
When it hits 250* you shut it off till it cools and then tow or limp it to a trailer so you can put another trans in it.
I wouldn't spend a bunch of money on a pan or dipstick

You can't wheel with a 16:1 crawl ratio :****:

In my mind this is your problem get better gear choices or you will get very good at swapping transmissions out :rolf:

Swap some Rockwells in. Instant 33:1 crawl ratio

Rockwells and a 4 speed. Thread is over. molaugh

Either way...it's the gearing that is making the heat and killing the trans from what I gather, and no amount of cooler is going to keep it alive with the high gears/heavy tire and me driving like an asshole.

I still want to know why the hell is 1st trying to go backwards...

My Tahoe did the same thing. My buddy said because clutches are welded together from heat. I still had reverse also.

Ive been following this mine took a dump recently also. It's going to the shop for a rebuild though I wish I had the time to try one myself. My wife said it looked like we were panning for gold when I showed her the pan. lota chunks in there

Unfortunately youll need to do this right to get a th350 junk to hold up offroad. They need upgrades to hold any type of power or abuse and they definitely need a good cooler or two. They aren't near as tough as the th400 in my opinion.

Re:

I've been running a 700 for 5 years behind a 350 with 39s and haven't had any issues. Just keep it cool. I'm thinking I might need to upgrade transmissions with a 6.0 and 43s this year. Luckily I've got a spare to go through before I worry much about that.

Flatland, I got a good transmission guy. Local to me. Would be a lot less than a shop I'm sure.. If ya ever need contact info hit me up. When he redid my 350, from me cracking the case I talked to him about upgrades. Which he did, but what I got out of what he told me, (what I rememeber anyway). Was that these upgraded parts really do one thing .. Handle MUCH more heat. Like double if I remember correctly. Ex. Tha stock clutches may **** up and melt at 250 degrees and the upgraded may be good to 400 ish. **** like that. And before anyone gets on here hollerin about my numbers being off, don't bother... It's prob safe to say that when u add the length of time it has been since rebuild, to the lucrative amounts of kush I've burned since then... The fact my numbers are a lil off should be pretty Fukin clear.

God I hope that made sense.

Ahhh. I gotcha... I always thought something had to be workin to hard when I had that dam 205 and 4:56's... I'd Put a tire on a rock, press gas and sit there till it would jump over it... Man there's no going back after some gearing... Not only helps with trans problems but ya can actually drive the rig, not point and shoot.

The buggy will be my first go around with autos off road. Ive always ran 4 speed bulldog trans with a 203/205 doubler and 4.10 gears. **** was geared in the basement.
